Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. It seems a small comfort to learn that this book chronicles an adventure in which the team became the first rafters to negotiate the upper Yangtze river - "without any fatalities". The front endpaper carries a large inscription, signed by Richard… Bangs: "Laurie - I can't help it, but whenever I see you I say 'Zamazing!' and 'O-mo!' Good thing you don't book Niger! Love, Richard Bangs 12/89". I guess it made sense to Laurie! Illustrated with two sections of color photographs. Under the dust jacket there are signs of some damp staining to the spine ends, but a very good copy in very good, slightly rubbed and edgeworn dust jacket, with offset staining from the damp damage to the inside surface, and one short, creased tear to base of front panel. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First edition. A short tear to dustjacket. From the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau at more than 17,000 feet above sea level, the Yangtze sweeps nearly 4000 miles to the East China Sea near Shanghai. Its source, in a remote and sparsely populated area, was discovered in… 1985; few travelers had seen the upper river in one of the last unexplored regions on Earth. Bangs and Kallen, coauthors of Rivergods , wanted to be the first Americans to raft the uncharted Great Bend section of the upper Yangtze. They lost out to Ken Warren and his Sino-USA Expedition; in addition, two Chinese groups planned to run the river from its headwaters (altitude 17,660 ft.) to Yibin (797 ft.). In three ill-fated expeditions of 1986 there were six fatalities. The following year, Bangs and Kallen successfully took a team of experienced rafters and well-heeled clients to the river. To their first-rate adventure story, the authors add background material on ethnic groups and early explorers of the region. Photos .

The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. There is some beginning bumping to the bottom spine end of the book cover. Th…e text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is in mostly clean and bright but has some beginning bumping and tiny nicking to the spine ends and corners. "Bangs' college summers were spent as a Colorado River guide in the Grand Canyon. After college, Bangs and some friends concocted a plan to run wild rivers in Ethiopia. In February 1973, he and his crew successfully ran the Awash River in Ethiopia. His identity as a river guide was solidified at that point. Bangs and his penniless friends figured they could finance a return trip or two by taking clients along. And so they did on the Omo in Ethiopia and Sobek Expeditions (co-founded with John Yost) was born, named in gratitude for the Egyptian crocodile god who may have spared their lives on those early first descents. Sobek became a river-running exploratory company via which Bangs and fellow guides racked up 35 first descents. Sobek Expeditions merged with Mountain Travel to become Mountain Travel Sobek in 1991. Bangs served as president of Outward Bound (20012002). " (from Wikipedia).
