Muthesius, a Prussian architect sent to London in 1896 as attache at the German embassy, examined not only architecture but also decoration, gardens and domestic life, treating house, interior and garden as a single unity. His analysis moves from historical and formal questions to functional and technological ones, with sections on drainage, bathroom fittings, kitchen appliances and the organisation of servants.
