These sources include forty-one volumes of Preuss's "Fortnightly Revue" as well as his numerous editorial contributions to "Die Amerika" and the "Echo". In addition, some five thousand extant pieces of Preuss's professional and private correspondence are studied. This data is contrasted and compared with information available in other sources in order to provide a sketch of the German and conservative Catholic perspective on the controversial issues of the day. Specific issues which are studied include the controversy surrounding German Catholic ethnicity and 'Americanization', the foundation of the Catholic University of America, the 'social question', or the German Catholic experience of World War I.
