Hard Back. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Miller, John - Photographs (illustratore). 224 Pages. Grenen cloth with gold lettering on spine and front. Pointed corners. No defects noted. The English have a talent for cultivating their gardens, making them beautiful and interesting, and it is no coincidence that it was an Englishwoman who invented the idea of garden rooms. And if English people in general cultivate their gardens with a passion, lavishing on them immense thought, devoted care and hours of work, Londoners are masters of the art. Give them the smallest patch, be it a dark basement, an exposed rooftop or a tiny yard, and as often as not they will turn it into a luxuriant, flower-filled haven where they can observe the passing of the seasons and escape the noise and grime of the urban jungle. This book describes a few of them. You will not find practical tips or technical discussions here, for it is concentrated instead on the individual nature of each garden, endeavouring to do justice to the elusive spirit of place, that personal quality that is unique to English gardens especially noticeable in London. Many of these gardens are hard- won triumphs against adversity, and are the more cherished and fiercely personal for it. Chosen here are almost forty gardens which illustrate the remarkable variety of gardens to be found in London. There are historic gardens and botanical collections, communal squares and cottage gardens, grand formal designs and meadows of wild flowers, gardens perched on roofs and tucked into basements, painters' gardens and period gardens, a Japanese garden and a post-Modernist garden, a sub-tropical jungle and a vivid display on the roof of a narrow boat. Running like a thread through all of these gardens, uniting them in their tremendous variety, is the owners' great love of plants and the most strong feeling for design. Many gardeners are only too happy to share their secrets and their plants, pressing cuttings and seedlings on fellow enthusiasts. This is particular to London gardeners, many of whom put hours of back-breaking work into cultivating a plot which may be enjoyed as much by passers by as by themselves, or club together to tend commonly-owned land, or willingly look after a neighbour's garden as well as their own for the sake of making the whole street look pretty. Many also open their gardens to the public once or twice a year under the National Gardens Scheme, often collecting considerable sums for charity.
