Set in Cambodia following its fall to the Khmer Rouge, the plot explores the photo-journalist's role in assisting the badly-led South Vietnamese and Cambodian troops. Langford's obsession with their plight eventually drives him to put down his camera and pick up a gun. In doing so he takes on a mythical quality. Winner of the 1996 Miles Franklin Award. There is a companion historical novel, 'Out of Ireland' (1999), which was awarded the 2000 Victorian Premier's Literary Award Vance Palmer Prize for Fiction.
