Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. No Jacket. ESSEX IN DOMESDAY BOOK; FULL COLOUR MAP OF ESSEX AS RECORDED IN DOMESDAY BOOK 1086 WITH INTRODUCTION AND GAZETTER BY W. RAYMOND POWELL, DESIGNED BY KEITH MIRAMS, PUBLICATION 103. Softcover, A4 in size, book, with full-colour map of Essex as recorded in Domesday Book 1086. This wonderful b…ook is in very good condition, virtually unused, and as its a used item, normal wear, marks and tear, apply consistent with use and age. Published in 1990 by the Essex Record Office, County Hall, Chelmsford. with the aid of a grant from the Essex Committee for the 900th anniversary of Domesday. 32 pages all intact. Since 1903, when J. Horace Round published the first Domesday map of Essex, much has been published on the topography of the county in the 11th and 12th centuries, notably in The Place Names of Essex, the Victoria Country History, and Essex Archaeology and History. The novocentenary celebrations of Domesday, in 1986, stimulated interest in the subject, and prompted a call for a revised and augmented Domesday map. The new map is in full colour with specially decorative features. Like its predecessor, it names the hundreds and manors, and indicates the principal landholders. In addition, it shows marshland and woodland. The main Roman roads have also been added, to help those studying continuity of settlement during the Dark Ages, and to guide the readers round a map of strange names. A Gazetteer of all the hundreds and manors is appended to the Map. This is followed by a list of the Domesday manors which cannot be precisely located, and by a note on the method of mapping woodland. Introducing the Gazetteer is a short essay on Essex in the Domesday Book.
