Franklin Richardson Kendall was… born in 1839 into a family with great naval traditions. He travelled extensively between 1858 and 1866 and while away wrote regularly to his mother. The collection of 78 letters, each commencing with "Dearest Mother", comprises nearly 300 pages. The fascinating letters were written at a time when substantial world-wide social and industrial changes were being made (Britain, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia noted).
