In 1980, Coates was a tutor at the Architectural Association in London with not one built project, apart from the interior of his own flat, to his name. Like others of his generation of architects, he had graduated during the recessionary 1970s to discover that opportunities to build were few and far between. A life of teaching, theory and "paper architecture" seemed a lot more attractive than grubbing around for flat conversions or toiling in the offices of one of the bigger and duller practices. By the end of the booming 1980s, however, Coates had a twenty-strong practice of his own, a partner, Doug Branson, and a string of completed projects to his name, the most extraordinary of which - Caffè Bongo, the Metropole restaurant, the Bohemia jazz club and L'Arca di Noè - were built not in Britain but Japan. When Coates said, "We're more an architectural airline than a conventional office" and dressed his staff in air crew uniforms for an office-opening party, it was with good reason. He might not have been the only designer to export his talents to a Japanese market hungry for Western authenticity in the middle of the 1980s, but he was the only British architect who had to travel to Tokyo to convince his countrymen that his architectural visions amounted to anything more than a portfolio of fancy but unbuildable drawings. In the process of commenting on the culture he found there, he had produced some of the most remarkable and widely published interiors of the 1980s. As Architectural Record observed in 1987: "Though not well known outside fashionable London circles, the 38-year-old Englishman has succeeded in outshining his European colleagues by pinching the very nerve of Tokyo itself." His admiration for Vivienne Westwood, his projects for Katharine Hamnett and Jasper Conran and the regularity with which he appears, fashionably kitted out, in the pages of Vogue, Tat 1er, Arena or The Face suggest, to the more earnest end of the profession, an architect less preoccupied with matters of substance than with image.
