The title alone is wonderfully rooted: born and bred is not the language of branding consultants or arts-funding strategy documents. Books like this are often underestimated, which is a mistake. No promise that this is ?the untold story that changes everything.? It is enough that Peter Ruffles was from Hertford, knew Hertford, and had something worth preserving about Hertford. And then there is the faintly glorious possibility that this book contains exactly the kind of detail that outsiders would miss and locals would instantly recognise: names, corners, routines, institutions, old assumptions, ways of doing things, the sort of memory-map by which one generation quietly hands a place to the next. That is the beauty of oral history. It catches not just facts but atmosphere. Not just what happened, but how it felt to live there while it was happening. This copy is in As New condition, which is almost suspiciously neat for a book about lived experience and memory. It sits there looking fresh, orderly and entirely unruffled, as if local history should always arrive in pristine form rather than smelling faintly of old paper, parish halls and a retired person?s sideboard. Still, there is something rather pleasing about finding such a carefully kept copy. It suggests respect ? and this is exactly the sort of book that deserves it.
