Incredibly, the state of Israel operated Czech-built Avia S-199s during its War of Independence in 1948-49. Today, the Bf 109 is considered one of the greatest fighters ever produced. The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is one of the most famous fighters of all time. First flown in 1935, it was continually developed, serving with the Luftwaffe first-line until the German surrender in May 1945. More than 33,000 were built, serving in the air forces of over ten nations. Post-war, it remained in production in both Czechoslovakia and Spain.
