His main concern was to combine the faith in Jesus as Israel's Messiah with the belonging to Israel as God's chosen people. Yet, the Church since the 4th century decided against this way. One could be either Jew or Christian. The widespread uncertainty regarding the question of Jewish Christians motivates to take a new look on James, the brother of the Lord. German description: Jakobus gehort zu den haufig ubersehenen und oft missverstandenen grossen Gestalten aus der Anfangszeit des Christentums. Als Bruder von Jesus stand er ihm wahrend seines irdischen Wirkens ablehnend gegenuber. Als unerwarteter Auferstehungszeuge gehorte er jedoch seit Beginn zur Gemeinde in Jerusalem. Deren Leitung hatte er fur rund 20 Jahre inne, ehe er im Jahr 62 als Gesetzesubertreter in Jerusalem gesteinigt wurde. Dennoch gilt er als Verfechter eines am judischen Gesetz orientierten Judenchristentums und als Hauptgegner des Paulus und der gesetzesfreien Heidenmission. Der mit ihm verbundene Jakobusbrief fristet seit Luthers beruhmter Vorrede als stroherne Epistel zu Unrecht ein Randdasein. Das Hauptanliegen des Jakobus war es, den Glauben an Jesus als Messias Israels und die Zugehorigkeit zu Israel als Gottes erwahltem Volk miteinander zu verbinden. Die Kirche seit dem 4. Jahrhundert entschied sich jedoch gegen diesen Weg: Man konnte nur entweder Jude oder Christ sein, und dies wirkt bis heute nach. Die weit verbreitete Unsicherheit im Umgang mit judischen Christen motiviert dazu, noch einmal neu auf den Herrenbruder Jakobus zu schauen.
