Examplesofthe newapplicationsincludestatechartsinobject-orientedmodeling, nitetra- ducersinnaturallanguageprocessing,andnondeterministic nite-statemodels incommunicationprotocols. Manyofthenewapplicationscannotsimplyutilize theexistingmodelsandalgorithmsinautomatatheorytosolvetheirproblems. Newmodels,ormodi cationsoftheexistingmodels,areneededtosatisfytheir requirements. Also,thesizesofthetypicalproblemsinmanyofthenewapp- cationsareastronomicallylargerthanthoseusedinthetraditionalapplications. Newalgorithmsandnewrepresentationsofautomataarerequiredtoreducethe timeandspacerequirementsofthecomputation. TheCIAAconferenceseriesprovidesaforumforthenewproblemsand challenges.
