Inthe1960sand1970s,automataresearchwasmotivatedheavily byproblemsarisingfromcompilerconstruction,circuitdesign,stringmatching, etc. Inrecentyears,manynewapplicationsofautomatahavebeenfoundin variousareasofcomputerscienceaswellasinotherdisciplines. Examplesofthe newapplicationsincludestatechartsinobject-orientedmodeling, nitetra- ducersinnaturallanguageprocessing,andnondeterministic nite-statemodels incommunicationprotocols. Manyofthenewapplicationscannotsimplyutilize theexistingmodelsandalgorithmsinautomatatheorytosolvetheirproblems. Newmodels,ormodi cationsoftheexistingmodels,areneededtosatisfytheir requirements.
