It is well-known thatthegradientof a differentiable convexfunctionis monotone.The class of monotonemappings(and theclass ofmultivaluedmonotoneoperators) has remarkableproperties.This class has beengeneralizedin various direc tions,withapplicationsto partialdifferentialequations ,variationalinequal ities,complementarity problemsand more generally, equilibriumproblems.
