Malgre les difficultes liees a la chaleur tropicale, les deux femmes se sont consacrees a des recherches naturalistes, un siecle avant Humboldt. Elles ont explore des forets tropicales denses, eleve des insectes, peint de nombreux animaux et plantes, note des dates d'emergence et etudie l'ecologie des plantes hotes. Ce furent les premieres etudes naturalistes jamais realisees a Surinam. Leur engagement courageux a eu un cout : au debut de 1701, Maria Sibylla Merian est tombee gravement malade de la malaria et a du retourner en Europe. En 1705, elle a pu publier les resultats de ses etudes sur Surinam. Trained as a copperplate engraver and watercolorist, she documented the metamorphosis of butterflies, laying the foundation for modern entomology. What Merian observed when breeding native species of butterfly triggered her curiosity, and spurred her to further investigation; the development from ovum, via larva and chrysalis, to adult butterfly was not fully understood in the 17th century. And not every pupa developed into a butterfly, which puzzled Merian for a long time.
