Softcover. White & color illus. wraps, French flaps,160 pp., 139 color plates, sundry BW & color illus. Issued in conjunction with a 2004 exhibition. These 139 drawings and 3 prints had been part of the Koenigs Collection in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Netherlands, until they were seized by the Nazis during WWII.… Many were tracked down in Kiev, Ukraine; and authorities there decided to return the art to the Netherlands. "Most of the recovered drawings are by 15th- and 16th-century German artists, including works by such famous draughtsmen as Hans Holbein, Hans Baldung Grien and Lucas Cranach. They have not been on public view for more than 64 years. Fifty have never even been illustrated before and as such represent new discoveries." (back cover) Fascinating. VG ( Bookplate & label & few marks from art-library owner; slight soiling to back cover.).
