Nel romanzo Doris Lessing immagina che l'Europa non sia stata sconvolta dalla Prima e poi dalla Seconda guerra mondiale, e che tutte le pulsioni belliche siano state dirottate in imprese coloniali extraeuropee. La protagonista è Emily, fondatrice di scuole per i poveri e infaticabile "dama di carità", tormentata però da una vita sentimentale infelice. Intorno a lei varie figure, tra cui quella di Alfred, agricoltore sposato con una simpatica e affettuosa cicciottella di nome Betsy. Attraverso questo singolare filtro metastorico, l'autrice rilegge in forma paradossale la vita dei suoi genitori (e di tutta una generazione di inglesi), una vita che invece è maturata nel cono d'ombra della guerra e ha patito il trasferimento in Africa.
