Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Bound in contemporary smooth leather boards with a newer full leather spine laid down. Text in gilt to the spine. 8vo - [iii - xx],1 - 171,[20 Index] pp. The boards are solid though certainly aged. The corners are all rounded and there is some scuffing. The hinges, interior and exterior, remain very solid. A previous long-ago owner, not that handy with a quill, has left some smudges to the Index. Some minor foxing to the first several pages. Two previous owner dated signatures to the front free endpaper. The earlier name, dated 1900, is that of James J[ohnston]. Shaw [1845-1910]. He lived a varied life, first as a Presbyterian Minister, later becoming a Professor of Metaphysics and Ethics at Magee College, Derry. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1878. He joined the faculty at Trinity College, Dublin as the Whately Professor of Political Economy. He held several more impressive positions until finally becoming a County Court Judge of County Kerry. The contents of the book remain clean and easy to read. . With a very good example of the large fold-out map [dated 1743] of County Down executed by Charles Smith. Very Good.

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. xx, 271pp, [21]. With a large engraved folding map. Contemporary tree-calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Lightly rubbed. Later armorial bookplate to FEP M.A. of Dublin, and a member of the Irish Bar, Daniel De La Cherois (1825- 1905) of Donaghadee, County Down, inked ownership inscription to head of title: 'Danl. De La Cherois / Donaghadee 29 Decr. 1859', typed note (signed by De La Cherois) tipped-in to p. 252, manuscript annotation to p.253, very occasional spotting. The first edition of an authoritative survey of County Down, the first history of its kind in Ireland, co-authored by topographer Charles Smith (c. 1715-1762) and historian Walter Harris (1686-1761). The work, dedicated to Sir Hans Sloane, was intended to be the first in of a series and, in order to facilitate this objective, Smith, with others, founded the Physico-Historical Society in Dublin in May, 1744. Under the auspices of the society, he published The Antient and Present State of County Waterford (1746) and The Antient and Present State of the County and City of Cork (1750). Following a dispute arising from moneys he argued were owed to him by the society for his work, Smith departed, taking with him in recompense an undisclosed number of copies of his history of County Down to sell himself. He continued his surveying work, and in 1756 published The Antient and Present State of County Kerry, leaving surveys of another three counties (Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary) unfinished in manuscript form. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition of The Antient and Present State, here combined unusually with the first London edition of its parent work, A Topographical and Chorographical Survey, presented in a very well preserved plain period binding. Charles Smith (c. 1715 - 1762), the moving force behind this important book, could be described as an Irish John Aubrey, being an "itinerant enquirer" into topographical, historical, and antiquarian information for the counties of Munster. In May 1744, along with a group of like-minded individuals he founded the Physico-Historical Society in Dublin, and under their auspices published two similar works on Waterford and Cork. Following a split with the society in 1750 he continued his surveying work and issued a further volume on Kerry (accounts of Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary, were left in manuscript). ODNB describes the present work, which is dedicated to Sir Hans Sloane, as "the first county history of its kind in Ireland". It is an extensively revised version of the second work bound up here, A Topographical and Chorographical Survey of the County of Down (Dublin printed for Thomas Boreman, London, 1740). Smith is an appealing character who had an "eccentric" interest in "meteorological and natural oddities", strengthening the parallel with Aubrey, his works giving "a snapshot of the lifestyles of the Protestant gentry of Munster in the middle decades of the eighteenth century and a pointer towards the social and economic improvement of the province" (ibid.). This attractive copy is from the library of Charles William Vane, third marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854), with his elaborate bookplate; his arms, with hussar supporters, including his many military awards. A brave but not particularly brilliant soldier - Sir John Moore described him as "a very silly fellow" - Vane served with variable distinction throughout the Peninsular War. His Narrative of the War (1828), based on his correspondence with his half-brother Lord Castlereagh, was not uncontroversial. His dashing and dandified portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence is at the National Portrait Gallery. ESTC T144670 and T51470. Two works bound in a single vol., octavo (194 x 121 mm). Fine large engraved folding map of the county. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt-banded spine, red morocco label, sides with border of paired gilt fillets, blind dog-tooth edge roll. At head of first title page the ownership inscription, "J: Allen, Trin Coll Camb: 1760". Some old stripping to back cover, map just a little creased. A particularly smart copy.
