Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Obgleich chronologische Stränge das Werk durchziehen, kann doch eine durchgehende Chro-nologie nicht aufrechterhalten werden, schon deshalb nicht, weil Beckett mit siebzig dazu neigt, Erinnerungen aus seinem ersten Lebensjahr ebenso wie - ja, mehr als - solche aus seinem sechsten Jahrzehnt heraufzubeschwören. Es liegt indessen nahe, die frühen Einflüsse von Elternhaus, Foxrock und Umgebung zum Ausgangspunkt der Betrachtungen zu machen. Das Herz von Becketts Irland liegt in den Dubliner Bergen und im Küstengebiet um die Dubliner Bucht; davon handeln Kapitel 2 und 3. Schulbildung und akademische Einflüsse sind in Becketts Schriften nicht erkennbar reflektiert (man kann natürlich die Entfaltung seiner Begabung als Folge der Bildungseinflüsse verstehen), doch mag die Schulzeit auf der Portora Royal School mehr, als zunächst zutage liegt, auf Beckett eingewirkt haben; und so ist Kapitel 4 dieser Institution und demTrinity College, der Universität, gewidmet. Kapitel 5 weist auf die Bedeutung von Dublins Straßenszene mit den öffentlichen Gebäuden, wie zum Beispiel der irischen Nationalgalerie, hin. Ebenfalls in diesem Zusammenhang steht Kapitel 6 mit dem Titel Der Fluß, das in weitläufiger Odyssee der Krümmung des Grand Canal und des Liffeyflusses folgt, wie in Becketts Gedichten Enueg 1 und Serena III beschrieben. Kapitel 7 ist gänzlich den beiden Dubliner Irrenhäusern gewidmet -dem in Portrane und dem House of St. John of God. Becketts Achtung vor geistig Behinderten soll hier ausgelotet werden. Kapitel 8 handelt dann von den Eigenarten, Dialektwendungen, Überzeugungen, Vorurteilen und auch von den alltäglichen Sorgen und Beschäftigungen der Dubliner Bevölkerung; hier finden sich auch kurze Hinweise auf literarische Persönlichkeiten wie Denis Devlin und Thomas MacGreevy, die in Becketts Äußerungen als Kritiker auftauchen, auch auf den Maler Jack Yeats und andere Randfiguren wie die Brüder Boots und Billy in the Bowl. In Kapitel 9 wird das irische Land außerhalb der unmittelbaren Umgebung von Dublin einbezogen. Becketts Abschied von Irland mag, wie im Schlußkapitel dargestellt, in Wirklichkeit auf der Landemole von Dun Laoghaire oder am Nordufer der Liffeymündung stattgefunden haben - seinen geistigen Exodus aber vollzog er, wenn ich mich nicht täusche, in der verwüsteten Stadt Saint-Lô in der Normandie, wo er mit ein paar irischen Freunden das Hôpital de la Croix Rouge Irlandaise de Saint-Lô im Jahre 1945 begründen half.
