Léon-Georges-Jean-Baptiste CARRÉ, (Granville 1878- Alger 1942), peintre et illustrateur orientaliste, fut l'élève à Rennes de Mathurin Méheut puis de Bonnat et de Luc-Olivier Merson. Il exposa au Salon des Artistes Français (1900), au salon des Indépendants, au salon d'Automne et fut pensionnaire de la Villa Abdel-Tif à Alger dès 1909. Il rapportera de ses voyages de nombreux croquis pris sur le vif. "L'amour des voyages l'entraîne vers le Sud ; le goût du réel, la soif d'humanité, l'inclinent vers l'étude des milieux et des races. Son exotisme n'a rien de la turquerie traditionnelle (.)" (in "L'Art et les Artistes" N°108, mars 1914).
