Die Familie zog noch im gleichen Jahr nach Hot Springs um. Mit 14 Jahren nahm Clinton den Namen seines Stiefvaters an, den er selbst als Spieler und Alkoholiker bezeichnete und dem er überdies unterstellte, regelmäßig seine Mutter und gelegentlich auch seinen Bruder misshandelt zu haben. Clinton machte 1968 mit 22 Jahren einen College-Abschluss an der Georgetown University in international affairs als Wirtschaftswissenschaftler. Während des Studiums arbeitete er halbtags für einen demokratischen Abgeordneten aus seinem Heimatstaat Arkansas.
