Boards. The last four pages contain a catalog for the scientific instrument maker Benjamin Cole. It is titled "A CATALOGUE of Mathematical Philosophical, and Optical Instruments, Made and Sold by BENJAMIN COLE, At his Shop, the sign of the Orrery, No, 136, in Fleet-Street, London". The list is quite long, with prices for each, followed by a note that the entire inventory is too tedious to enumerate so interested parties should apply with their interests in hand. "Joseph Harris was the son of a Cornish blacksmith who also designed mathematical instruments. He moved to London and became a success as a teacher, author and mathematical instrument maker. He was appointed Assay-Master of the Mint at the Tower of London in 1748 (many have mistakenly called him Master of the Mint, which is a different position; nor was he ever elected to the Royal Society). This is an expanded version of the small book on the Globes first written by [another author] John Harris [in 1703]. Joseph Harris revised and extended that original book.[which] incorporates the original description of the globes by John Harris but is extended by the inclusion of a brief description of the solar system, anda long description of an Orrery. It does not include the Collins quadrant material from the original John Harris work." Tomash & Williams H22 (describing the 1731 edition of this work) Benjamin Cole whose catalogue is found on the final four pages and his son (also Benjamin Cole) were both were well respected scientific instrument makers who are avidly collected today. This catalog was probably issued by the son, whose known working dates start in 1768. E. Cushee was a known associate of the father (and co-publisher here as well as engraving some of the plates). Decorative woodcut initials. Rear index. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure, the spine sympathetically re-backed, new endpapers. All seven plates present, as called for. Just a touch of browning and spotting, but largely a clean well-preserved copy. Notes: An expansion of Harris s 1703 work, including a lengthy description of the orrery. This work proved to be a popular handbook on globes which ran into many editions. Harris begins with an introduction to the latest models of globes, celestial and terrestrial. He then demonstrates how to use the globes to solve problems, including finding latitudes and longitudes for any given place, finding the position of the sun at any given date, discovering on which date the sun will be directly overhead in any given spot in the torrid zone, computing the length of any given day of the year, finding the altitude of a star, and so on (Taylor, The Mathematical Practitioners). Joseph Harris (1702-64) began as a blacksmith in Cornwall with an interest in mathematics. He designed and made mathematical and navigational instruments, and his interest in navigation led him to voyage to Mexico and Jamaica. He also taught mathematics, and in 1748 became Master of the Mint in the Tower of London. These interests are reflected in his publications on coinage and navigation. The two publishers of the book were also practical savants: Thomas Wright was a maker of scientific instruments, who specialised in the orrery, while Richard Cushee (who died in about 1732: the publisher here is probably his son) was a maker of globes and was the engraver of the plates in this book.

Cushee, globe-maker at the Globe and Sun, between St. Dunstan's Church and Chancery-Lane, both in Fleet-Street. Joseph Harris (1703-1764), was a blacksmith, astronomer, navigator, economist, natural philosopher and government adviser and King's assay Master at the Royal Mint. Joseph appears to have moved in with John Senex, notable chart- and map-maker, and was perhaps apprenticed to, but certainly working with Senex, and the co-operated to produce at least two star-maps. A one-time blacksmith, Harris was discovered by Hally after moving to London in 1724. He was sent on two voyages of the Indies to test navigational instruments, and the present work was first published in between the two voyages.
