An extension of the collaborative work conducted between the American Museum of Natural History & Columbia University (both places where had conducted research), this is a massive 2-volume set, with Vol. I (736 pp) containing the Text & Vol. II (1013 pp)…the Illustrations, including pen-and-ink drawings, engravings, & 3 fold-out charts--all pristine & appearing never opened. From the estate of a local biology professor, this is a FIRST EDITION, first printing from 1951 (with review notice laid in), this set is bound in publisher's deep blue cloth & lettered in gilt to front & spine (which is faded). Condition is Near Fine: exceptionally clean, bindings straight & strong, pages lightly tanned. Former owner's name stamp to ffep in both, along with a homemade card pocket inside back cover (but not ex-lib). NO writing or underlining or highlighting.
