Pages tanned, bottom of page edges untrimmed as published, some occasional foxing and marks, a printing smudge to the text of page 285 of Micah Clarke (see photos); 1 page creased (a paper flaw) to The Green Flag (see photo of page 180); the title page of The Tragedy of Korosko with a small dent (2-3mm) to the top of the page; some wrinkled pages to 3 volumes as follow: damp staining to The White Company top inner gutter from page 430 to the end (see photo); damp staining to the bottom of all the pages of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (see photo of the bottom of page 418); badly damp stained with wavy pages to The Stark Munro Letters and Round the Red Lamp volume. Top page edges are gilt, the fore and bottom page edges are untrimmed and foxed. Two illustrations to each volume by Arthur Twidle, and other illustrators. Publication History The Author's Edition was a joint publishing venture between D. Appleton of New York and the London firm of Smith, Elder and Company. "510 sets were bound by Smith, Elder and Company. The remaining 490 quires were passed to John Murray when the company was sold; they were re-issued with new title-pages dated 1903 in and after 1917. Because of the author's friendship with Reginald Smith, he agreed to sign the thousand copies of the English issue. Provenance: no inscriptions or bookplates. Pagination: see above. Size: approximately 8 ½ inches tall. Externally Spine very good condition gilt titles, five raised bands with gilt decoration to the compartments. Joints very good condition.
