Withdrawn from library, with typical markings on fly leaf front and back. Book is in very good condition, slight shelf wear on edges, spine, pages 5-9 have had folded corner, pages are yellowing; top edge patterning is more faded than side and bottom, but still visible. A great find.

Hardy's only story for younger readers was first serialised in 'The Household' magazine. It was first published in book form in separate limited and trade editions (illustrated by Lynton Lamb) in 1952. This is the only other edition to date. 'That so considerable a piece of prose could have lain in MS at a publisher's for nearly a decade and then, though printed when Hardy's reputation was at a peak in the year after 'Tess', have gone unnoticed and disappeared from memory are facts as surprising as any in Hardy's bibliography' (Purdy: A Bibliography of Thomas Hardy).
