Condizione: Very Good. Hardcover, 96 pages. During World War II, the British government issued a series of public warnings in the form of witty posters by the brilliant cartoonist Fougasse, a.k.a. Cyril Kenneth Bird. (?Don't forget that walls have ears!? a fashionable woman whispers to a friend, as Hitler's face peers ominously out of the wallpaper.) This illustrated tribute to one of Britain's most popular artists begins with his celebrated WWII posters and continues with his later work for Punch magazine and elsewhere. An important contribution to the history of both cartooning and propaganda, it compares the relative effectiveness of hard-hitting American wartime designs versus Fougasse's light touch. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. With an original and brilliant style, as well as an excellent sense of gentle satire, Graham Laidler , drawing under the pseudonym of PONT was one of the most popular and successful artists who contributed to that great British humor magazine, "Punch". This book, simply titled "PONT", is a selection of Laidler's inimitable cartoon art that was originally published in "Punch". It's easy to see why he had an influential effect on other cartoonists. The book has an excellent preface by English cartoonist-artist Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird). TITLE : PONT AUTHOR : PONT ( Pen name of Graham Laidler, 1908 - 1940) INTRODUCTION : Fougasse (Pen Name of Cyril Kenneth Bird, 1887 - 1965) Bird was another successful cartoonist, who did much work for the British government during WWII. He was also quite influential, and was one of the few cartoonists to be the editor of a major periodical ("Punch"). IMPRINT : Collins, 48 Pall Mall, London DATE : 1942 EDITION : First Edition (Printed under war time strictures.)
