Wraps. Condizione: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 7 inches by 10.25 inches. [8], 84, [4] pages. [Sale Number 1805]. Illustrations. 452 numbered items presented for sale. Text printed on front cover and spine. Cover has some wear and soiling. Ex-library with usual library markings. Patrick B. McGinnis,at one time managed the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. Lustreware or lusterware (the respective spellings for British English and American English) is a type of pottery or porcelain with a metallic glaze that gives the effect of iridescence. It is produced by metallic oxides in an overglaze finish, which is given a second firing at a lower temperature in a "muffle kiln", or a reduction kiln, excluding oxygen. Georgian silver is silverware produced and belonging to the Georgian era that ranged over a 120 year period between 1714 1837. Although William IV, with the death of George IV, ascended the throne in 1830 (and was obviously not a George) he is generally brought into the conversation. The Georgian Kings were: George I (1714-27); George II (1727-60); George III (1760 1820); George IV (1820-30) and William IV (1830-7). The period in question saw many developments across Britain and the rest of the world. With Britain through empire and industrialization amassing great wealth, which was being expressed in all forms of art, with creations in silver an integral part of this. This is a sales catalog, describing each piece in a paragraph of detail, from a free public exhibition and auction. Parke-Bernet Galleries was an American auction house, active from 1937 to 1964, when Sotheby's purchased it. The company was founded by a group of employees of the American Art Association, including Otto Bernet, Hiram H. Parke, Leslie A. Hyam, Lewis Marion and Mary Vandergrift. By 1964, the company was the largest auction house in America, with 115 employees and total sales of $11 million ($108 million in 2023). That year, Sotheby's purchased a controlling interest of 75% in the gallery for $1.5 million ($15 million in 2023). The company was founded in 1937, by a group of forty former employees of the American Art Association, including Otto Bernet, Hiram H. Parke, Leslie A. Hyam, Lewis Marion and Mary Vandergrift. In January 1938, the first auction was held in a gallery at 742 Fifth Avenue. The next year, the company took over the American Art Association-Anderson Galleries, consisting of the American Art Association and the Anderson Galleries (formerly Anderson Auction Company). Parke-Bernet oversaw the sale of the estate of Georges Lurcy, a prominent art collector, whose estate included works by Raoul Dufy, Alfred Sisley and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The collection sold for over 2 million pounds in 1957, a record. Other customers of the company included Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Paul Mellon and Henry Ford II. Ford's purchase of La Serre by Renoir through Parke-Bernet was a world record. Parke-Bernet also oversaw the sale of the Mrs. Jonathan Amory Haskell's extensive Americana collection and the estate of Hagop Kevorkian, the Armenian archaeologist, antiquities dealer, and philanthropist whose foundation gave major contributions to support the study of the Near East and Middle East at the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, and Columbia University.

Robert Sterling Clark (June 25, 1877 December 29, 1956), an heir to the Singer Sewing Machine fortune, was an American art collector, horse breeder, and philanthropist. Sterling Clark purchased his first Impressionist painting, Pierre-Auguste Renoir's Girl Crocheting, in 1916. He and his wife Francine (18761960) continued to collect art rapidly and towards the end of their lives established their collection as a museum near the campus of Williams College in Williamstown Mass. Over several decades he and his wife collected numerous paintings by Renoir, plus dozens of paintings, sculptures and pastels by other Impressionist artists. In 1950, Sterling and Francine Clark chartered the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute as a home for their extensive art collection. Edna Wallace Hopper (January 17, 1872 December 14, 1959) was an American actress on stage and in silent films. Hopper became associated with a line of personal care products and cosmetics, Edna Wallace Hopper Cosmetics, sold by American Home Products. In 1953, she performed the same role she had begun her acting career with in 1893, at the final performance at the Empire Theater in Manhattan. She went on to become a stock trader and was the first (and, during her tenure, only) woman of the thirty-six member board of L. F. Rothschild & Co.
