Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Two parts in one volume, 8vo (192 x 120mm). [8], [2], 604pp. Title printed in red and black. Engraved half title. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Julius Caesar. 13 copperplate engraved plates and maps (seven folding Europe, Gall, Castra Caesaris, Caesar's bridge, Alesia, Pompeii, Alexandria), and full pages depicting, Uxellodunum, Massilia, Avaricum, Turris Caesaris and three breeds of land roaming animals (p. 237). Later calf; (pages 143-154, 255-258, 357-362, excised, front cover loose but present, some wear with use, tape repairs to some maps, overall in tact). Plates are complete, tho -- oddly -- text is not. Sold as is. Ex-Libris of Joannis Clarke of the former Trinity Collection, Canterbury. Scattered annotations in various 18th century hands by early owners "Nov. 10 1747 John Dryden" and "Sussex" in another hand "Abraham Covent" all on final verso. Inscribed "G.B. Blagden March 1793" on engraved half title. Later inscribed " M.E. Doble" on front pastedown. Despite the ascription to a shadowy "Julius Celsus," this is in fact and edition of the biography of Julius Caesar that Petrarch composed very late in his life. As someone imbued with the spirit of Livy, Petrarch is much more concerned with Caesar's military campaigns and recounts them in detail. The attention he gives to Caesar concerns some facts regarding family history and his personal qualities such as courage and intellect. While the primary source is Suetonius, Petrarch reports personal details not found in the Divus Julius, such as the year of Caesar's birth, the names of his parents, and his youthful prowess in Greek, Latin and rhetoric. This copy certainly captures the essence of a student's enthusiasm for pouring over the text, leaving their mark and even excising what they like. Despite this the volume includes all of the valuable commentaries on the Gallic and Civil Wars, all Books and ending "belli Alexandrini fuerunt" as it should.

The sources for the plates are varied, and include Thomas Hariot's 1590 book on Virginia, Clüver's Germaniae antiquae libri tres (Leiden, 1616), and Andrea Palladio's illustrated edition of Caesar (Venice, 1575). The eighty-seven plates comprise a frontispiece portrait of Caesar, a portrait of the dedicatee (folded), a double-page engraved title-page, six double-page engraved maps (of Gaul, Britain, Germany, Italy, Egypt, and Spain), plans of military camps, views of armies and battles (most notably a battle using elephants on a large double-page plate), costume plates (including a depiction of a Wicker Man and an animal sacrifice), plates of military activity such as building walls or siege towers, and the large double-page plate famously depicting an aurochs. The volume concludes with nine double-page plates of the Triumphs of the Caesars by Huyberts after Andrea Mantegna, seemingly based on woodcut copies by Andrea Andreani rather than the originals, located then (and now) at Hampton Court. The bookseller and publisher Jacob Tonson (1655/61736) was perhaps the most successful printing entrepreneur of his time. He specialised in literature and Classical texts, both in the original and in translation, and helped shape some of our modern ideas about great works of literature. Tonson paid particular care to the presentation of this work, with regard to layout, typography, and illustration; the paper, typeface, and artists were all Dutch, though the printing was carried out for Tonson in London by John Watts. Emigré Dutch artists produced high quality engravings, which have ensured the enduring interest in this edition, beyond the careful scholarship of Samuel Clarke (see Suarez, 'Hard cases: confronting bibliographical difficulty in eighteenth-century texts', PBSA 111 (2017), pp.130).'AmongTonson'smajor publications during the Kit-Cat years is his great folio edition, in Latin, of the works ofJulius Caesar; some nine years in the making, it finally appeared in 1712. No English publisher had ever produced so lavish a book before, with its careful scholarship (the texts were edited bySamuel Clarke), its numerous maps, and its eighty-seven engravings done in superb detail by Dutch artists. The book was dedicated to theduke of Marlborough, and had as its frontispiece Kneller's portrait of Marlborough. Again, this was published by subscription, and in this caseTonsonarranged to have each subscriber's coat of arms printed on each double-plate page' (ODNB). Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Buono (Good). Folio (465 x 288mm). 87 engraved plates, comprising: engraved double-page additional title, 61 double-page plates, many by C. Huijberts after Mantegna, including a famous image of a bison, 25 full-page plates including a folding portrait of the Duke of Marlborough by George Vertue (1684-1756); numerous engraved headpieces and vignettes in the text, initials. Faint even browning throughout but a very fine copy in contemporary red morocco, spine richly gilt in 8 compartments, dark-green morocco gilt lettering-piece in second, the others with foliate tools and volute cornerpieces, marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: 'L' (small circular stamp dated 1910 on rear free endpaper).First edition.?The most sumptuous classical work which this country has produced' (Lowndes) bound in contemporary red morocco with 87 attractive engravings by various artists, including the famous image of a bison that is sometimes missing or damaged. The Tonson's Caesar received contemporary praise from Joseph Addison as ?a Work that does honour to the English Press', having ?passed thro' the Hands of one of the most accurate, learned and judicious Writers this Age has produced. The Beauty of the Paper, of the Character, and of the several Cuts with which this noble Work is illustrated, makes it the finest Book that I have ever seen; and is a true Instance of the English Genius' (The Spectator no. 367, May 1712). The work is annotated by Samuel Clarke (1675-1729), a major English philosopher, especially renowned for his theories on the existence of God and the immortality of the soul. He also corresponded with Leibnitz and in 1706 translated Newton's Optiks into latin. Among his philological works is also an edition of the first 12 books of the Iliad. For the present edition, he chose Caesar's accounts of his campaigns in Gaul and Britain (58-50BC) and of his participation in the Roman Civil War (49-48BC) along with the remaining works on his military campaigns in Alexandria and Asia, Africa, and the Iberian peninsula. The volume is ?dedicated to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, the victorious English general at the Battle of Blenheim (1704) and instrumental to the military successes of the Grand Alliance more generally, this monumental volume establishes by a secular typology that Marlborough is the new Julius Caesar of Europe. Strange as that may seem from the long view of history, Samuel Clarke's cloying dedication to the Duke as the ?noblest, wisest, and strongest? of men (?Nobilissimo, Sapientissimo, & Fortissimo?) says as much from its opening paragraph, describing the ancient commander as ?outdone only by YOU [Marlborough] in glory and success, and in every part of the character of a consummate general? (?TUA solius armorum gloria & felicitate & laude omni superatum?).10 Understandably, then, Marlborough's portrait (by George Vertue after Godfrey Kneller), complete with a cartouche proclaiming him ?Illustrissimus, Potentissimus, et Excellentissimus,? occupies pride of place as the frontispiece of the volume.' Aggiungi al carrelloFIRST EDITION THUS. Folio. Large paper copy (48 x 33 cm). Title. pp.[iv]+560. Contemporary full red straight-grained morocco, spine with raised bands and lettered in gilt, sides bordered with double gilt fillet. Text in Latin. Engraved portrait frontispiece, additional title, dedication portrait, 6 folding maps and 78 full page plates of which 56 are double page. A magnificent copy. "The most sumptuous classical work which this country has produced" (Lowndes, 344), and "one of the finest books to emerge in early eighteenth-century British publishing" (McKitterick, 145). The text comprises the only extant work of Julius Caesar (102? - 44 B.C.), soldier, emperor, orator, poet, and historian whose name is foremost among leaders in the ancient world. Written largely as a justification of Caesar's military policy, the "Commentaries" are famous for their simplicity, succinctness, and purity of diction. First printed in 1513, the account begins with Caesar's firsthand description of Rome's war for Gaul, written in straightforward prose that has made it a staple of Latin language instruction. It is followed by Caesar's comments on the 49-48 B.C. civil war he fought against Pompey and the Senate. The remaining works on his military campaigns in Alexandria and Asia, Africa, and the Iberian peninsula were not written by Caesar; the Alexandrine account is attributed to Aulus Hirtius (ca. 90-43 B.C.), Caesar's legate, and scholars speculate that the two final works were composed by, in Macaulay's words, "a sturdy old centurion who fought better than he wrote." Our famous edition was edited and annotated by Samuel Clarke (1675-1729), and was praised by Joseph Addison in "The Spectator" (May 1712) as having "passed thro' the Hands of one of the most accurate, learned and judicious Writers this Age has produced. The Beauty of the Paper, of the Character, and of the several Cuts with which this noble Work is illustrated, make . . . it the finest Book that I have ever seen; and is a true Instance of the English Genius." The work is annotated by Samuel Clarke (1675-1729), a major English philosopher, especially renowned for his theories on the existence of God and the immortality of the soul.
