LA PINACOTECA DI BRERAguida pratica BRERA QUATTRO SECOLI Il primo saluto a chi entra a Brera lo dà la statua di Napoleone di ANTONIO CANOVA. È una fusione eseguita a Roma nel 1811 dalla statua scolpita nel 1802. La statua non era piaciuta a Napoleone: primo, perché lo ritraeva nudo, secondo, perché la Vittoria sembrava volargli via. Purtroppo la Vittoria fu rubata nel 1978 approfittando di un ponteggio issato per ispezionare il monumento. Il cortile, tutt'in-torno, ha i caratteri di un grande collegio gesuitico, sull'esempio del Collegio Romano, a Roma, e nel tipo di altri collegi, come quello Borromeo (fondato nel 1561) di Pavia. Brera fu un collegio gesuitico dal 1572 al 1776. Prima era stata la casa principale dell'ordine degli Umiliati, una delle più potenti associazioni religiose del Milanese, attivissima, oltreché in opere religiose, nel promuovere l'industria laniera. Brera, in antico BRAIDA (donde l'aggettivo "braidense": si tratta di una voce d'origine germanica, come PRATO e tanti toponimi settentrionali: Brà, Brè, etc.) sorgeva presso la congiunzione fra alcune importanti vie d'acqua (Tumbun de San Marc). Esiste ancora, profondamente trasformata per adattarla a museo, poi ad aula dell'accademia, l'antica chiesa degli Umiliati, Santa Maria di Brera, con significativi affreschi di GIUSTO DE' MENABUOI (per la visita rivolgersi alla segreteria dell'Accademia, poiché nella chiesa vi sono la scuola di nudo e la scuola serale). La ristrutturazione dell'antico convento degli Umiliati in collegio gesuitico fu opera di GIUSEPPE RICHINI, a partire dal 1591, ma fra varie difficoltà fu conclusa soltanto da GIUSEPPE PIERMAR1NI nel 1773 (portale d'ingresso del 1780). Dal 1776 l'imperatrice Maria Teresa d'Austria aveva istituito a Brera, oltre all'osservatorio astronomico e all'istituto di scienze, lettere ed arti e alla biblioteca (oggi Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense), anche un'Accademia di belle arti. All'Accademia erano annesse una raccolta di calchi ingesso da antiche statue, oggi in parte ancora in Accademia e in parte dispersa, e una raccolta di dipinti, incominciata nel 1799 con i quattro grandi altari, rispettivamente di PIERRE SUBLEYRAS, POMPEO BATONI, GIUSEPPE BOTTANI, oggi esposti nella sala XXXIII (provengono dalla demolita chiesa dei Santi Cosma e Damiano di Milano). Fra il 1801 e il 1804 la raccolta ricevette alcuni doni, ma fu dal 1805 che incominciarono ad arrivare decine e decine di opere provenienti da chiese soppresse della Lombardia, cui presto si aggiunsero altre centinaia di dipinti trasportati dai vecchi domini papali e dal Veneto. Fu così formata una delle più ricche pinacoteche d'Europa. Nel 1808 per creare spazio alle raccolte, su progetto di PIETRO Gì LARDONI, fu tagliata all'altezza delle navate laterali la chiesa di Santa Maria di Brera, in modo di creare i grandi saloni a colonne detti ancora "sale napoleoniche" e, purtroppo, fu abbattuta la facciata trecentesca della stessa chiesa, i cui marmi, scolpiti da GIOVANNI DI BALDUCCIO, ebbero una sistemazione museale al piano inferiore e di lì migrarono poi al Castello Sforzesco. Dal 1892 la Pinacoteca è indipendente dall'Accademia. Si sale alla Pinacoteca dalle due rampe che partono dal cortile; al sommo si affaccia sul pianerottolo la porta settecentesca di accesso alla biblioteca; si gira a sinistra e si arriva alla biglietteria, dove è anche in funzione una libreria. Ci si rende conto subito della grande fame di spazio che affligge la Pinacoteca. Lingua: italiano|.
