Lempriere (1765-1824), a British educator and churchman, published the first edition of the dictionary in 1788; a second edition followed in 1792, the chief additions being the chronological table and the lists of current editions of Greek and Latin classics. The book then went through numerous other editions and changes from 1792 through the twentieth century. The present edition updates the chronological table, cross references the names of Greek and Latin Gods and heroes, and updates the spelling of proper names. Lower rear cover (1") and lower front edge irregularly faded due to damp exposure; two light cup stains to front board. Otherwise clean and tight with only light rubbing to cover extremities.
