"Similarly, Elizabeth Willis's short novel, Lesby, published in Scribner's Magazine in 1930, depicts the title character with many of the same masculine characteristics. Although they, too, are not enough to prevent Lesby from receiving a marriage proposal. Unable to commit to a wedding date for reasons readers can easily infer, Lesby does not endure the self-sacrificing." (from The Masculine Woman in America 1890-1935 by Laura L. Behling).

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: very good. N. C. Wyeth (illustratore). First edition. Original 3/4 orange patterned paper on boards with small black cloth spine, lettered in gilt. The Scribner "A" and seal are present on the copyright page. The book itself is extremely clean, bright and pleasing. A novel which at first glance tells of a small rural domestic struggle - two sisters very dis-similar in temperament are pursued by one man and in somewhat different manners those affections are returned. However, the title is not an accident. Lesby is described in masculine terms. Lesby is pursued by the suitor but she is unable or unwilling to follow through with the commitment. She remains determined to maintain the family farm - on her own if needs be. Originally issued in Scribner's Magazine, N. C. Wyeth read it and was so impressed that he asked if he could contribute some art. He most wonderfully did with a tipped-in frontispiece echoed on the cover of the dust jacket. The jacket itself has a few rough spots and has some taped areas to the verso but overall remains very bright. The jacket is only rarely seen. Near Fine / very good.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. .8vo. pp 24. 175 ms by 215. Original printed white wraps.2 illus. A curious booklet seeming to emanate from the great William Gaddis defender Jack Green - the pseudonym of Christopher Carlisle Reid (born 1928), an American literary critic, who some have suggested is Gaddis himself (but this seems unlikely.) Reid started a self-published fanzine called 'newspaper' dedicated to the work of Gaddis. In the first edition of this, Green claimed that The Recognitions (1955) was the greatest book of all time. After meeting Gaddis, Green wrote an article called 'Fire the bastards!' for newspaper #12 that fiercely denounced the literary critics, who he believes doomed the novel with their bad reviews. In 1962, he also took out a full-page ad in The Village Voice heralding the paperback edition of The Recognitions (in which he again took a swipe at the critics). This work which possibly appeared in another form in 1970 sets itself out as a sort of prospectus for a second edition with descriptions of how it will look etc., The title is taken from the first words on the page the next words are 'FRONT COVER'. He also says at one point that the name of the book is 'Im going dancing with Lesly Lesby.' 24 pages of experimental writing, some (very little ) in his trademark lower case style with no punctuation. It seems to portray the adventures of one Lesly Lesby with many asides, jokes and jibes. On one page is a real old British postage stamp and a modern Ceylonese one and on another page a real US 8 cent stamp featuring Emily Dickinson. The opening sentence seems to refer to Gaddis ' character Senta, a Norwegian girl. "I had Miss Norway in a doorway. And she did it the whore way. It wasnt me who said that, it was 1 of the rotten no good characters in my novel. Just for that I wont write a novel. " RARE. No copies in any library / unknown to any search engine. Very good with some very light wear.
