Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. A numbered nine-volume series of Kipling works: fiction, poetry, essays, autobiography, each 190 to 450 pages. Books, in flexible covers, show only a bit of shelfwear, with Kipling swastikas at top and bottom of spine and opposite title page. Bindings tight; all pages clean; gilt text slightly worn. There's no listing of the volumes, but it seems like a complete series: Vol. 9 concludes with "The Kipling Index," a meticulous 48-page listing of every story and poem in "the authorized American trade edition of Rudyard Kipling's works." But the index refers to a few volumes that aren't in this series, so go figure.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Rudyard Kipling's 'Kim' is a masterful blend of adventure and philosophical exploration, set against the backdrop of British-occupied India. Written in a vivid and lyrical style, the narrative immerses the reader in the complexities of cultural identity and the geopolitical intrigues of the time. The illustrated edition enhances Kipling's rich prose with visual interpretations that deepen the reader's engagement with the multifaceted world of Kimball O'Hara--a street-savvy orphan who becomes embroiled in the secretive denouements of espionage, spirituality, and the quest for belonging. Kipling's intricate depicting of characters and landscapes offers both a literary and historical canvas, illuminating the British Raj while exploring themes of loyalty, friendship, and the dichotomy of East and West. Rudyard Kipling, born in India, was profoundly influenced by colonial experiences, which became the fertile ground for his literary endeavors. His upbringing in a rich cultural tapestry and exposure to diverse philosophies reflected in 'Kim' are testament to his nuanced understanding of identity and the socio-political landscape. Kipling's stature within the literary canon as a chronicler of imperialism adds depth to the contemporary reader's examination of his work, revealing a complex interplay of admiration and critique. 'Kim' is essential reading for those interested in adventure literature, colonial history, and cultural studies. Kipling's elaborate narrative, peppered with humor and wisdom, invites readers to embark on a journey of self-discovery alongside Kim, making it not just a tale of adventure but also a profound exploration of life in a turbulent era. This illustrated edition offers a fresh opportunity for both longtime fans and new readers to appreciate Kipling's enduring masterpiece.

A collection of prose and poetry by Rudyard Kipling, known for his fiction set in British India, his children's books (e.g., The Jungle Book), as well as his verse. Includes: Plain Tales from the Hills; Soldiers Three; Wee Willie Winkie; Life's Handicap; Many Inventions; The Day's Work; Traffics and Discoveries; Debits and Credits, Actions and Reactions; A Diversity of Creatures; Limits and Renewals, Thy Servant a Dog; The Jungle Books; Just So Stories; Puck of Pook's Hill, Rewards and Fairies; Stalky & Co., Land and Sea Tales; The Light That Failed, The Naulahka; Captains Courageous, Kim; From Sea to Sea I; From Sea to Sea II; Letters of Travel 1892-1927; The War, A Fleet in Being; The Irish Guards I; The Irish Guards II; Uncollected Prose; A Book of Words, Souvenirs of France, Something of Myself; Departmental Ditties, Barrack-Room Ballads; The Seven Seas, The Five Nations, The Years Between; Songs from Books, Later Songs from Books; Early Verse, The Muse Among the Motors, Miscellaneous. Kipling was born in British India, which inspired much of his work. Kipling's works of fiction include the Jungle Book duology (The Jungle Book, 1894; The Second Jungle Book, 1895), Kim (1901), the Just So Stories (1902) and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If - " (1910). He is seen as an innovator in the art of the short story. Kipling in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was among the United Kingdom's most popular writers. Henry James said "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius, as distinct from fine intelligence, that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, as the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and at 41, its youngest recipient to date. He was also sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and several times for a knighthood, but declined both. Following his death in 1936, his ashes were interred at Poets' Corner, part of the South Transept of Westminster Abbey. Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed with the political and social climate of the age. The contrasting views of him continued for much of the 20th century. Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "[Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognised as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with." The collection of Barrack-Room Ballads was issued in March 1892, first published individually for the most part in 1890, and contained his poems "Mandalay" and "Gunga Din". Signed by author.

Aggiungi al carrello12mo. 33 volumes. Publisher's limp red/burgundy leather, gilt. Top edges gilt. Silk marker ribbons. Some volumes illustrated. Most volumes have a little wear to the spine ends. No ownership marks except for a neat ink presentation on the fly of Something of Myself, 'To Willie, With fondest love from Clara 15.vi.37.' Contents clean and fresh. Near fine. This run lacks just four volumes from the complete set: A Kipling Anthology: Prose; A Kipling Anthology: Verse; Souvenirs of France & Thy Servant a Dog. Most volumes are reprints from the late 1920s but there are some first editions (in any format) included. Complete sets are very uncommon due to the long publishing history and the fact that, though it is called a Uniform Edition, it was never sold new as a set. Someone has clearly spent years putting this together.
