This is the scarce first edition of one of his most celebrated works. Chapters within discuss physiography, structural geology and mountain-building, volcanism, erosional processes, etc. However, most of the volume discusses geologic history: describing the eras and periods of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic, with much detail on rock distribution and fossil occurrences, climate, and geologic processes. The volume is illustrated by maps, scenic views, cross-sections, and exquisite fossil drawings, many by paleontologists James Hall and F.B. Meek. To say that this treatise is comprehensive is an understatement. ***CONDITION: This is a fully complete, VG+ copy in the original embossed and decorated brown cloth boards with beveled edges; original backstrip with gilt lettering and decoration. The covers are well preserved, but mildly edgeworn; spine lightly sunned, title lettering bright. Joints and hinges solid, binding very firm. The text pages are fresh, clean, and bright.
