He was a co-founder of the Berwickshire Naturalists' Club and contributed to the founding of the Ray Society. He was 'keenly addifted to field sports and a master equally of the rod and the gun'. While ornithology was his main massion, he also studied ichthyology, botony and geology. His book on fossil burrows and traces the Ichnology of Annandale, included fossils from his ancestral estate. He was the first to coin the term 'Ichnology' and this was the first book written on the subject. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptist Lamarck and Charles Darwin. Darwin himself, in his foreword to the 6th edition of the origin of Species, credited Aristotle with foreshadowing the concept of natural selection but also stated that "the first author who in modern times has treated it in a scientific spirit was Buffon". The Lycee Buffon in Paris is named after him. Buffon is best remembered for his great work Histoire naturelle, generale et particuliere (1749-1778: in 36 volumes, 8 additional volumes published after his death by Lacepede).
