Aggiungi al carrelloLondon, Macmillan and Co., 1889 (1889). 4°. 6 Bl. mit Frontispiz, 56 Seiten, 4 Bl. Mit zahlreichen teils blattgroßen farbigen Illustrationen. OHalbleinen mit farbiger Deckelillustration. Erste Ausgabe im 4. Druck. - Kanten gering berieben, Deckel leicht fleckig. Insgesamt schönes Exemplar. - Original cloth-backed glazed pictorial boards, with delightful cover illustration signed E. Gertrud Thomson and illustrations throughout by Tenniel, here enlarged and now coloured in subtle and very pretty hues; an exceptionally attractive copy of a volume which appears in a well-read state; slight darkening to boards, edges and corners a touch rubbed, spine clean and internally immaculate. First edition, fourth printing. The nursery version of this classic story was conceived by Carroll to be "read, to be cooed over, to be dogs' eared, to be rumpled, to be kissed" by children from nought to five. Thus he rewrote it in a simpler amd abbreviated format of 16 chapters. As with so many Lewis Carroll's works, "The Nursery Alice" has a complicated bibliographical history. It has now been ascertained that the first edition of 10 000 was withdrawn and deemed unsatisfactory due to over-bright colour printing. 500 of this edition were bound and sent to America where they were rejected as not being bright enough! The edition was reprinted, with Carroll finally accepting and edition in October 1889. There are several variants bearing the date 1889. Madan records the first issue as having "Peoples Edition Price Two Shillings" on the title, however his own copy corresponds almost exactly to our own, except that our copy has an illustration of the March Hare on the lower board. Carroll rejected this issue in September 1889, as the "hare" was not printed in the centre of the board. Williams, Madan and Green, p. 147. Aggiungi al carrellopp. (viii), 56, (i) [TURN OVER], (iii) An Easter Greeting, (i) Christmas Greetings, (ii) Advertisements, (i) Specimen Page. Coloured frontispiece and 19 coloured text illustrations by TENNIEL. White cloth spine unlettered, coloured pictorial boards [the front board signed by Thomson, the rear board with a central vignette of the March Hare initialled by Thomson - in both cases the original owner has gone to the trouble of erasing the Thomson signatures very carefully but has left a portion of the letter 'E' on the front board and by the position of the erasures indicating what has happened], without the front free end-paper, the tissue guard to the frontispiece torn at attachment without loss, the first 8 pages have a few light pencil underlines and the odd marginal note, the covers are scuffed and worn at spine ends and corners, some margins have marks, clearly a used but decent copy. *This copy is printed on white, rather than toned, paper; the price of 'Four Shillings' above the imprint is changed to 'One Shilling' [though the Advertisement at the back of the book still announces 'Four Shillings'], the illustration on page 34 of Alice and the Cheshire Cat shows Alice with her back towards the reader and not in profile.
