Descrizione: 1962. First Edition. "KESEY, Ken. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. New York: Viking, 1962. Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket. $10,500.First edition of Kesey s most "popular and enduring" work, boldly inscribed by Kesey: "For Maggie, Ken Kesey, 1994.""Ken Kesey's first novel remains his most popular and enduring Cuckoo's Nest resonates with the classic theme of the individual rebelling against the controlling forces of society" (Books of the Century, 98). On publication in 1962, Time magazine called Cuckoo's Nest "a roar of protest against middlebrow society's Rules and the invisible Rulers who enforce them." Adapted to the stage in 1963, with Kirk Douglas in the lead, the novel was the basis for the highly successful 1975 film starring Jack Nicholson. First issue, with "that fool Red Cross woman" on page 9, lines 12-13, in first-issue dust jacket containing Kerouac's endorsement on the front flap. Owner gift inscriptions on front free endpaper. Tiny tear to half-title where Kesey's signature pressed through the paper.Book near-fine, with a few spots of foxing to front endpaper and mild toning to bottom edge of cloth. Dust jacket very good, with some wear and light staining mainly to extremities, shallow chipping to spine ends and mild toning to spine. A desirable copy.". Signed. Codice articolo 106086

Descrizione: New York: Viking, 1962., 1962. First edition, first printing, first state with the 3 Red Cross woman passages present; these were quickly changed due to a lawsuit. Dust jacket is first state with the Kerouac quote on the front flap. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED by the author on the dedication page: "For Dennis: Hey you know this 1st edition (signed) is worth about $900 on the book market. Ken Kesey" Fine in Fine dust jacket. There is a small (about 0.5 inch squared) red stamped advert at a lower corner of the rear paste-down endpaper: Bell s Books Palo Alto. This could probably be lightened or removed by careful erasure, but we consider it a positive for the copy, as Bell s, founded in 1935, was and still is about a 5 minute drive from the Menlo Park VA facility where Kesey worked, took psychoactive drugs in a US government project, and was inspired by staff and patients to write this novel. The jacket is complete with no tears, but has some slight rubbing and a few small thin scrapes near the spine top, 2 thin scrapes in the brown background under the author s name on the spine; there is some light tanning to the interior of the jacket, especially near the folds. The inscription is not dated, but our source acquired the book already signed in 1988, so that provides a terminal date. Codice articolo INV5162

Descrizione: Viking Press, New York, 1962. Condizione: Fair. First edition. Rear hinge restored, multiple drink rings and stains on the boards, a few small stains in text, a poor copy with jacket flaps glued into the rear blanks, otherwise lacking the dustwrapper (with a later supplied homemade brown paper jacket). An interesting albeit conditionally grubbing copy, with a bookplate on front pastedown presenting the book to a Los Angeles-area library from Dorothy Parker. Parker returned to Los Angeles in 1961 to reconcile with her estranged husband Alan Campbell (who committed suicide in 1963). Presumably Parker found Kesey's first book serviceable as a drink's coaster. Something of a generational keystone, this novel was the basis for the 1975 film that was the first to win all five major Oscars since It Happened One Night in 1934. Codice articolo 391778

Descrizione: Viking Press, New York, 1962. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First Edition. Fine in spine faded dust jacket, which otherwise shows very little wear. A highspot in American literature that made its author a celebrity, inspired an Academy Award-winning movie (the 5 big awards, though Kesey himself wasn't entirely pleased with it), and changed the way people thought about mental institutions, drugs, and authority. While many see it as representative of the tumult of the 1960s, Kesey was wont to place himself between The Beats and the countercultural groups of the sixties: "I was too young to be a beatnik, and too old to be a hippie." Perhaps that makes it timeless. Codice articolo D1845
