In fair condition. Moderate wear to extremities with heavy scuffing to surface of cloth. Cloth moderately soiled with staining, dampness mark and evidence of old blooms. Corners scuffed with cardboard exposed. Paper residue on front board from previous pasting? Joints are quite delicate with major loss at front joint at bottom compartment. Binding exposed. Crushing at spine ends with loss and fraying. Dampness staining to margins of textblock. Consistent toning throughout with scattered foxing, heavy at times. Folding charts in rear have minor tears, but all are in working order, toned evenly. Free of known marginalia. Binding intact. Please see photos. Scarce with intact folding tables. As a pseudo-science, mnemonics gained considerable favor in the mid-19th century, Fauvel-Gouraud being one of its more outspoken proponents. The BM catalogue lists at least two other works of his on the subject, both published in America, as well as a book on universal alphabets. The work at hand is a dictionary designed to facilitate the memory process, and with its folding tables and appendices appears to be as much a challenge for the printer as it was for the public at large. Fauvel-Gouraud came to the United States as an expert in daguerreotypes, but soon gained fame as an outspoken proponent of mnemonics. Part II is announced in the preface, but no record of its publication is available.
