Leech's illustrations are all present, but apart from the colour frontispiece, the plates are all reproduced in black and white. Surtees lampoons the marriage market and innumerable dubious characters of his aquaintance. .

One or two early pages uncut. Ther are small tears to the top edges of two pages (not affecting the text). There is a frontispiece and twelve other highly coloured illustrations by John Leech protected by tissue guards. The frontispiece has become detached. This volume collates with the first book edition of 1860 published by Bradbury and Evans. However, the publisher in this volume is Bradbury and Agnew, and Agnew replaced Evans in 1872 so this volume was published after that. 6 x 9" pp. 406. Prelims are missing so the first page after the ffep is p. 1 of the book. 13 hand-coloured engravings on steel and 91 wood-cut illustrations by John Leech. Good in bevelled-edged decorated red cloth with gilt lettering to front and spine and gilt and black decoration. Spine is creased. Firmly bound. Contents generally clean but some occasional foxing. No stamps or labels. No dustwrapper as issued.
