For many years, the molecular biology of pro cary otes was focused heavily on bacteriophage and plasmid investigations which were carried out in only a few laboratories. Whatever inter est existed in plasmids concerned the role of these extrachromosomal elements in bacterial conjugation, genetic exchanges, and antibiotic resistance, as well as in the structure of plasmids themselves. Gradually, however, it became increasingly evident that many of the special characteristics displayed by bacteria of medical, agricul tural, industrial, and environmental importance are determined by genes carried by plasmids, and this interest in plasmid-encoded functions, such as bacterial virulence properties (exotoxin produc tion, serum resistance, adhesiveness), metabolism of organic com pounds, plant tumor formation, and biological nitrogen fixation, led to increasing study of. the plasmids that carry these genes. Inves tigations of other plasmid-related properties such as replication and recombination have yielded much information about fundamental biological processes; information having implications that extend far beyond the particular plasmids under study. Concurrently, plas mids were playing a key role in the discovery of bacterial transpos able elements and were proving to be increasingly useful in the elu cidation of mechanisms responsible for a variety of chromosomal rearrangement events in bacteria and plants. Their status as "mini chromosomes" that could be isolated easily from bacterial cells and then reintroduced into other cells by transformation is of fundamen tal importance in this regard.

Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest threats to modern clinical therapy and our society is presently facing a major challenge in maintaining the medical standard. Hence, with increased risk of antibiotic treatment failure, even small operations may become too risky and now-a-days simple infections turn into serious burdens. In recent years commensal bacteria such as lactic acid bacteria, have attracted attention, since they may contribute to spread of antibiotic resistance genes to pathogenic bacteria. As we ingest lactic acid bacteria in high numbers through our food, their history of antibiotic exposure and potential carriage of antibiotic resistance genes are very important to keep track of. Thus transfer of resistance genes may take place by mating (so-called conjugation) between bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. This work will try to elucidate the role of Lactobacillus as vectors for spread of antibiotic resistance genes in the human gastrointestinal tract.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The present study revealed that the soil was highly contaminated with the pesticides as well as with several heavy metals. IncP specific DNA sequences (trfA2 and oriT) were detected which revealed that IncP plasmids are prevalent in these Gram negative bacteria isolated from soil which was irrigated with wastewater discharged from industries. Present findings suggest the role of conjugative plasmids as contributors to maintenance and spread of adaptive traits (pesticide tolerance/metal and antibiotic resistance) in microbial communities. In this study, transconjugants isolated by exogenous plasmid isolation in biparental mating indicates that genes for the tolerance of pesticides and metals/antibiotic resistance can be distributed by conjugative plasmids in the natural environment. Our results suggest that wastewater and soil at an industrial area near a pesticide industry contained certain genotoxic agents which are capable of inducing mutations.
