Charles Edward Williams Reith (1886- 1957) was a Scottish police historian, best known for distilling the thought of Robert Peel into nine principles in his 1948 book A short history of the British police. He worked in Sri Lanka as a tea- and rubber- planter, where he joined the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps and on its disbandment rose to Captain in the Indian Army Reserve of Officers. Owners signature for T. E. St Johnson on free endpaper he was Sir Thomas Eric St Johnston (1911-1986) was a pioneering British police leader who served as Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary.Born on January 7, 1911, he was educated at Bromsgrove School. He became Britain's youngest-ever Chief Constable, leading three police forces—Oxfordshire, Durham, and Lancashire—serving in Lancashire from 1950. Credited with transforming modern British policing, he is widely regarded as the "father" of the panda car (the small patrol vehicle scheme). National Leadership: He served as Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary from 1967 until his retirement in 1970. He passed away on March 17, 1986.…
