A crisp copy in recent contemporary-style half-calf, raised bands, red morocco label, gilt cross bands, very light mostly marginal stain in several gatherings. Aggiungi al carrello8vo, pp. [xvi], 295; an attractive copy in contemporary panelled calf, spine nicely gilt, with morocco label (upper joint cracked). Fourth edition: first published in 1699, with a reissue in 1700, and a new edition later that same year. Thomas Baker (1656-1740) was a non-juror whose attitude to learning was coloured by his sense of its inadequacy: he believed that revelation was the only safe guide to salvation. As his biographer in new DNB points out, the book was touched a chord among contemporary readers, as it went through eight editions before 1760. Baker is well known to collectors of old books, too, because after his expulsion from St John's College Cambridge in 1717 (he having refused to take the oath of abjuration), whenever he wrote his name in one of his books, he added 'Coll: Jo: socius ejectus'.

Aggiungi al carrelloHard Cover. Condizione: Very Good binding. Sixth Edition. 8vo; in full calf double-ruled at the perimeter of the boards, with raised bands and double rules to the spine; [xi], 288 pages including the Appendix; contemporary previous owner name -- "T. de Grey" -- on the front endpaper; with attractive head- and tail-pieces and an woodcut capital at the beginning of the Prefeace; there is a small amount of loss to the spine, and the front gutter is cracked but holding well.~~Overall, a nice copy of this work by Thomas Baker, a fellow of St. John';s College, Cambridge. Baker argued against pluralism's claim that God would not creat lifeless worlds. In this work: "There cannot . be any absurdity in saying that all things were created for the sake of this inferior World, and the inhabitants there of, and they that have such thoughts of it, seem not to have consider'd, who it was that died to redeem it.". Very Good binding.
