By analyzing the works of prominent Athenian orators ââ â Antiphon, Andocides, Lysias, Isocrates, and Isaeus ââ â the author provides a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of Attic prose, tracing its development from its earliest forms to the sophisticated style of Demosthenes. Through a series of carefully selected excerpts, the book delves into the diverse range of topics addressed by these orators, from courtroom dramas to political pronouncements. Readers will encounter lively narratives, compelling arguments, and illuminating glimpses into Greek society, politics, and daily life. The author thoughtfully examines the historical context surrounding each oratorââ â¢s work, enriching our understanding of the social and political realities that shaped their words. The book further probes the artistic and rhetorical techniques employed by these masters of persuasion, revealing the evolution of style and the profound influence of Gorgias and other leading figures in the development of Greek rhetoric. By showcasing the rhetorical strategies and literary qualities of these orators, the book offers a rich and rewarding exploration of the enduring power of persuasive language, illuminating its role in shaping ancient Greek thought and culture. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book comprises four speeches created by the Greek orator Antiphon, providing a fascinating glimpse into the legal system and social norms of ancient Athens. It is believed that Antiphon composed these defenses for individuals who had been accused of murder and were on trial for their lives. In Athens, these individuals were expected to present their own defenses. As such, Antiphon's work offers unique insight into the oratorical techniques and arguments that were used in a real-life courtroom setting. The author was an important figure in the development of rhetoric, and his speeches are regarded as some of the earliest surviving examples of Attic Oratory. This book offers a valuable resource for those interested in studying law, ancient Greece, or the history of rhetoric. It is the first collection of forensic speeches written by a single Greek author to be translated into English. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This edition (2nd 1880) was designed by Jebb as a companion to his monograph Attic Orators from Antiphon to Isaeus (1974). The selection was meticulously made, as he himself emphasized, not merely as 'samples from a number of writers' but as illustration of 'successive steps in the process by which a language of most elastic resource was gradually adapted to a certain set of purposes.' The authors represented bridge the gap between the prose of Gorgias and Thucydides and that of Demonsthenes. At the same time the selections have their social and historical interest, reflecting Jebb's conviction that 'few authors . present more vivid or instructive pictures of Greek society.' That the edition survived in regular use by students for a hundred years says much for its quality. This reissue carries a substantial new introduction in which Pat Easterling assesses Jebb's scholarship and within it his work on the orators, while Michael Edwards writes more specifically about the edition's strengths and influences.
