This was Bernal's attempt to ensure that science would no longer be just a protected area of intellectual inquiry, but would have as an inherent function the improvement of life for mankind everywhere. It was a groundbreaking treatise both in exploring the scope of science and technology in fashioning public policy, with Bernal arguing that science is the chief agent of change in society, and in devising policies that would optimize the way science was organized. The sense of impending war clearly emerges. He deplored the application of scientific discoveries in making war ever more destructive, while acknowledging that the majority of scientific and technical breakthroughs have their origins in military exigencies.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very rare copy of the true first edition and printing (stated "first printing" on publication page) of the influential book on the history, philosophy and sociology of science, through a Marxist lens. Hardcover, missing dust jacket. Overall, this is an attractive copy in Very Good condition. Book has an "old book" odor (mostly just smells like an older person's home), but has no signs of previous moisture, mildew, etc., and is very clean. Previous owner's name in pen on front flyleaf and half-title. Small marker dot on bottom edge of textblock. Otherwise, text clean, unmarked and attractive. The two fold-out charts are fully intact and in excellent condition. Edges of textblock and pastedowns toned and lightly foxed in spots. Binding and hinges tight; binding square. Pages 253 and 255 are dings at the bottom edge, causing a small rip/chip. Hardcover boards bumped at corners, and lightly bumped in spots along edges of boards.
