Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. N.D., circa 1820s, 12mo, 314pp, plus index. Previous owner's name at front and rear endpapers in pencil, light toning throughout, first several pages (about 35) water-stained not affecting legibility, contemporary leather quite worn, hinges cracking, a good reading copy. This volume covers the period September 14, 1711 - December 18, 1711. The SPECTATOR was a famous series of essays, edited by the members of the fictional Spectator Club. It provided a picture of the social life of the times, while expressing the individual concerns of some of the fictional club members.

Frontispiece in b/w and and small portrait at title page. Brown leather boards lettered in gilt at spine, edges rubbed, corners bumped. Joints and hinges good, textblock is intact and firm. Contains article No. 170, Friday, September 14, 1711 through No. 251, Tuesday, December 18, 1711.

His Thoughts hang at best in a State of Doubtfulness and Uncertainty; and are never capable of receiving any Satisfaction on the advantageous Side; so that his Enquiries are most successful when they discover nothing: His Pleasure arises from his Disappointments, and his Life is spent in Pursuit of a Secret that destroys his Happiness if he chance to find it."
