Inaddition,therehasbeentremendousprogressintheareaofmaterialscience, wherein a new class of structural materials is designed to meet the parti- lar application. In most cases, these materials are not isotropic as in metallic structures. They are either anisotropic (as in the case of laminated composite structures) or inhomogeneous (as in the case of functionally graded mate- als). Analysis of these structures is many orders more complex than that of isotropic structures. For many scientists/engineers, a clear di erence between structural dynamics and wave propagation is not evident. Traditionally, a structural designer will not be interested in the behavior of structures beyond certain frequencies, which are essentially at the lower end of the frequency scale. For such situations, available general purpose nite element code will satisfy the designer's requirement. However, currently, structures are required tobedesignedtosustainverycomplexandharshloadingenvironments. These loadings are essentially multi-modal phenomena and their analysis falls under the domain of wave propagation rather than structural dynamics. Evaluation of the structural integrity of anisotropic and inhomogeneous structures s- jected to such loadings is a complex process. The currently available analysis tools are highly inadequate to handle the modeling of these structures. In this book, we present a technique called the 'Spectral Finite Element Method',whichwebelievewilladdresssomeoftheshortcomingsoftheexistinganalysis tools.

Patera, the abstract begins: 'A spectral element method that combines the… generality of the finite element method with the accuracy of spectral techniques.' The spectral element method is an elegant formulation of the finite element method with a high degree piecewise polynomial basis. The spectral method expands the solution in trigonometric series, a chief advantage is that the resulting method is of very high order. This approach relies on the fact that trigonometric polynomials are an orthonormal basis for L2( ). The spectral element method chooses instead high degree piecewise polynomial basis functions, also achieving a very high order of accuracy.

Spectral methods are a class of techniques used in applied mathematics and scientific computing to numerically solve certain partial differential equations (PDEs), often involving the use of t…he Fast Fourier Transform. Where applicable, spectral methods have excellent error properties, with the so called 'exponential convergence' being the fastest possible. PDEs describe a wide array of physical processes such as heat conduction, fluid flow, and sound propagation. In many such equations, there are underlying 'basic waves' that can be used to give efficient algorithms for computing solutions to these PDEs. In a typical case, spectral methods take advantage of this fact by writing the solution as its Fourier series, substituting this series into the PDE to get a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in the time-dependent coefficients of the trigonometric terms in the series (written in complex exponential form), and using a time-stepping method to solve those ODEs.

Spectral-element method (SEM) has excellent e…rror properties (exponential convergence) being the fastest possible: 1) geometrical flexibility, 2) high computational efficiency and 3) reliable spectral accuracy. SEM combines the flexibility of FEM with the accuracy of a spectral approach, adopting the hexahedral elements satisfactorily. A low-order FEM is not suitable for greater numerical stability and accuracy. With the application of h- (meshing) and p- (mapping) refinement techniques, SEM performs to be an efficient method over the existing FEM. This work is important to evaluate some fundamental issues related to vegetated and barren slopes. It explores the suitability of stochastic process on slope stability, the soil-root interaction considering progressive failure and three major limitations of the infinite slope method. This work also includes to a practical problem of cut slopes in road opening to minimize the construction risk and design the safe and economic slopes.
