Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 2nd Edition. HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY BINDING, CUTS BY DÜRER Small folio. ff. [12], 259, [3], [42], [24]. Black letter, with Roman. Woodcut title vignette and 116 ½-page woodcuts depicting Fools' paradise, decorated initials and ornaments. A handful of ll. at end very slightly browned, minor water stain to lower blank margin, the odd little marginal spot or mark. A very good, clean, amazingly crisp, well-margined copy in contemporary English calf over wooden boards, rebacked to style, original spine onlaid, two clasps (repaired), double blind ruled to a panel design, outer border with blind roll of interlacing palmettes, inner border with blind roll of heads within circles alternating with geometrical decorations (Oldham, HM a (6) 775), feps renewed. Early ms casemark and Estelle Doheny's bookplate to front pastedown, contemporary autograph 'Wyllyam Clerke' to title. In folding box by James Brockman. A fine, clean copy, virtually unpressed, in contemporary London binding, of the second English edition, including the Latin text, of this most influential and handsomely illustrated satire on human folly. A German humanist from Strasbourg, Sebastian Brant (1458-1521) completed his studies at Basel. There, he published his major works, the most renowned, 'Das Narrenschiff', in 1494. The humanist Jakob Locher translated it into Latin as 'Stultifera navis' in 1497. 'Stultifera navis' is a powerful satirical poem. 'In a ship laden with one hundred fools, steered by fools to the fools' paradise of Narragonia, Brant satirizes all the weaknesses, follies and vices of his time. Composed in popular humorous verse and illustrated by a remarkable series of woodcutsof which 75 are now attributed to the young Dürerthe book was an immediate success' (PMM 37). The nautical theme was probably strengthened under the influence of contemporary debates on voyages of exploration and the vanity of seeking knowledge of God's creation. Most famous is the chapter on the 'inquisition of geographical regions', or the foolishness of those who want to measure the earth, illustrated by a fool's-capped figure holding a compass. It also mentions Columbus's discoveries. The work opens with the Fool-Book Collector a most amusing satire of bibliophiles and 'unprofitable books'. In Barclay's translation, this bespeckled Fool is 'busy, books assembling, / For to have plentie it is a pleasant thing'. Albeit he does not read or study them, yet he has them 'in great reverence', keeps them 'safe from filth and ordure / By often brushing and much diligence', and likes to have them 'bound in pleasaunt coverture, / Of Damas [damask], Sattin or els of Velvet pure'. The English translation, first made for Pynson's 1509 edition, is by the Scottish poet and clergyman Alexander Barclay (1476-1552). 'The English "Ship of Fools" exercised an important direct influence upon our literature, [] helping to bury medieval allegory in the grave [], and to direct English authorship into the drama, essay, and novel of character' (DNB). 'This second edition [] contains the cuts from the previous English edition of 1509; all but 7 derive from those in the first edition of the "Narrenschiff" (Basel, 1494). [] Added in the English editions are cuts 68, 76, 86, 101-104' (Luborsky & Ingram 3546). At the end are appended Barclay's translation of Mancin's 'The Mirrour of Good Manners', a poem on the cardinal virtues, and Barclay's own English eclogues. The early owner, William Clerke (fl.1590s), may be the author of 'The Triall of Bastardie' (1594) and 'Polimanteia' (1595), one of the earliest known works mentioning Shakespeare's name. Estelle Doheny (1875-1958) was a collector and philanthropist, wife of the oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny - a most discerning bibliophile. ESTC S107135; STC (2nd ed.), 3546; Pforzheimer, 41; Luborsky & Ingram, 3546. H. Morley, English Writers (1891).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. [LAVISHLY ILLUSTRATED INCUNABULAR AMERICANUM] 4to. ff. 159, wanting final blank. Gothic letter. T-p with superb half-page woodcut of Ship of Fools, another 117, full-page or smaller, portraying the Fools in their various satirical occupations, handsome woodcut printer's device to verso of X4. T-p and margins of first two ll. a little soiled, small expert repair touching a handful of letters (couple partly supplied in ink on verso of t-p), upper and outer edge of first two gatherings a trifle frayed, intermittent light oil stain towards upper margin, small clean tear from outer edge of e8 just touching two words, annotations removed from first leaf of Registrum. A very good copy in early C19 crushed green morocco, sympathetically rebacked with onlaid spine, blind tooled to a panel design, title gilt-lettered to covers, raised bands, spine tooled in blind. Bookplate of S.H. Hodgson (1832-1912) and Rugby School (Hodgson bequest) to front pastedown, the odd C16 editorial annotation. A landmark of early printing, with superb woodcut illustrations partly attributed to the young Dürer, as well as with early references to Columbus's discoveries and, for the first time in this first enlarged Latin edition, a poem on the Ottoman threat. A German humanist from Strasbourg, Sebastian Brant (1458-1521) completed his studies at Basel. There, until 1500, he published his major works, the most renowned of which, 'Das Narrenschiff', in 1494. The humanist Jakob Locher translated it into Latin as 'Stultifera navis' in March 1497, adding four woodcuts andin this fifth and first enlarged Latin editionalso a new poem by Brant, 'De pereuntibus'. It also mentions Columbus's recent discoveries, which had first appeared in print in his letter to Ferdinand and Isabella of 1493, reprinted by Bergmann, Brant's Basel publisher, in 1494. The verse states that Ptolemy, Pliny and Varro were all wrong, and the 'terra' that was previously 'incognita' was now revealed; these Western Hesperides now belonged to King Ferdinand. Brant's new and final poem, 'De pereuntibus', deals with the Ottoman threat, and bears a separate t-p with figures engaged in foolish activities and a diagrammatic horoscope. After foreseeing a nefarious planetary conjunction on 2 October 1503, he bemoans the dangers in which Christianity has been cast by the Turks' 'irruptio' and argues for the support of the Emperor Maximilian in his fight against them. A lavishly illustrated important work and a fascinating edition. PMM 37 (1494 ed.); Goff B1090; HC 3750*; ISTC ib01090000; Alden 497/5; Church 13 (first Latin ed. of March 1497); Harrisse, Additions, 5 (first Latin ed. of March 1497). Not in BMC XV or Sabin. Göllner does not mention it in the C15 section of his introduction.

4to. 146 (instead of 164) ff., wanting fols. 1, 9, 15, 51, 56-58, 81-82, 96-97, the four unnumbered leaves after 144, 157-159, and the final blank. With 108 (instead of 117) woodcuts in the text and printer's device at the end. Early 19th century half calf over papered boards with giltstamped spine label. Edges sprinkled. Early, if incomplete Latin edition of the famous "Narrenschiff", originally published in German verse in 1494 - also by Bergmann - and translated by the author's student Jacob Locher. One of literature's most famous satires and a milestone in the history of book illustration: many of the woodcuts depicting human foibles (here printed from the original blocks) are now attributed to the young Albrecht Dürer. Before Goethe's "Werther" arrived on the scene, this work was the most successful book ever published in Germany, immensely popular and read until it fell to pieces, and complete copies of the incunabular Basel editions are nearly unobtainable. - In his "Ship of Fools", Brant describes the voyage of a ship bearing one hundred fools, to the fools' paradise of Narragonia, thereby satirizing the follies of his time including representatives of every human and social type. "[T]he first original work by a German which passed into world literature [. it] helped to blaze the trail that leads from medieval allegory to modern satire, drama and novel of character" (PMM). Erwin Panofsky called the book "a remarkably complete mirror of human life", based upon the "universality of Brant's self-righteous surliness [.] and the picturesqueness of his metaphors" (Panofsky, p. 30). Incidentally, the book also contains the earliest literary reference to the discovery of America: "Hesperie occidue rex Ferdinandus: in alto Aequore nunc gentes repperit innumeras" ("Ferdinand, King of the West, recently discovered innumerable peoples across the high seas", fol. 76v). Tellingly, the humanist-printer Bergmann had published the famous "Columbus letter" in 1493. - Some browning and brownstaining; occasional underlinings by a near-contemporary hand (more frequent in the beginning and within the chapter on women). Folio b2 is loosened. Rebound in the 18th century (edges trimmed fairly closely). Small hole in the spine, otherwise well-preserved copy from the collection of the Swedish statesman and diplomat Lars von Engeström (1751-1826) with his engraved armorial bookplate (motto "speravit infestis", "hopeful in adversity") to pastedown. - Hain 3751*. Goff B-1091; GW 5062. Bod-inc B-513. Sheppard 2560. Proctor 7778. BSB-Ink B-821. Hieronymus, Buchillus. 195. Cf. PMM 37. Harrise, BAV, Additions, no. 21.

A single contemporary flyleaf preserved at each end. A few small wormholes (worming slightly heavier at beginning and end), some very light browning. An exceptionally fresh and bright copy of this extremely rare and very early edition. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. Only three copies of this edition have sold at auction in the last twenty-five years: the Morgan Library copy in 1981, waterstained and with title soiled and weakened by acid, a copy in 1988 lacking twelve leaves, and a final copy in 1998 in a modern binding and with all the leaves washed. From the library of Helmut N. Friedlaender, with his booklabel on front pastedown. Armorial bookplate of William Fuller Maitland (1813-1876), bookplate of Georg Kloss (1787-1854), and leather booklabel of E.Ph. Goldschmidt (1887-1954) also on front pastedown. Leather booklabel of Carl J. Ulmann on front free endpaper, with his pencilled collation notes on front flyleaf (sale, Parke-Bernet, 15 April 1952, lot 60). Early bookseller's description affixed to front flyleaf. "'The Ship of Fools' is the most important of a long line of moralizing works in which the weaknesses and vices of mankind are satirized as follies. The tradition goes back to early medieval times both in England and on the Continent. In a ship laden with one hundred fools, steered by fools to the fools' paradise of Narragonia, Brant satirizes all the weakness, follies and vices of his time. Composed in popular humorous verse and illustrated by a remarkable series of woodcuts.the book was an immediate success. Brant's purpose was a moral one: he wanted to improve the life of his contemporaries and to help in the regeneration of the Holy Roman Empire and the Church.the book also contains the earliest literary reference to the discovery of America [on k4v]; the Columbus Letter had been published by the same printer the year previously. The influence of 'The Ship of Fools' was extensive and prolonged: thirty-six editions were published between 1494 and 1513.There were twelve translations in about forty different editions. Its most immediate imitators were Geiler von Kaisersberg, Thomas Murner, Hans Sachs and Johannes Fischart in Germany, where the 'Narr' as a type has lived until today. Erasmus's Moriae Encomium was directly inspired by it. 'The Ship of Fools' was the first original work by a German which passed into world literature.[It] played an important part in European literature, and helped to blaze the trail that leads from medieval allegory to modern satire, drama and the novel of character" (Printing and the Mind of Man). The Latin version of Das Narrenschiff was made under Brant's close supervision by his favorite pupil Jacobus Locher (1471-1528). This edition contains additional poems by Brant and Thomas Beccadelli. The interpolated quire contains further additions by Beccadelli and is also found inserted as a supplement in some copies of Bergmann's first enlarged Latin edition of 1 August 1497. The majority of the fine woodcut illustrations are those commissioned for the editio princeps of 1494, many of which are now recognized as the work of Albrecht Dürer. F. Winkler, in Dürer und die Illustrationen zum Narrenschiff (Berlin, 1951), attributed as many as seventy-three to the young artist, who resided in Basel for a few months in 1494. To the original series are added about a dozen new cuts which Bergmann had already used in his second German edition of 1495, first Latin edition of 1 March 1497, and first enlarged Latin edition of 1 August 1497. The original Basel series of illustrations was as influential as Brant's text, with all subsequent editions deriving from it. Alden and Landis 498/5. BSB-Ink B-821. CIBN B-760. Goff B-1091. GW 5062. The Ship of Fools is "the first original work by a German which passed into world literature, and helped to blaze the trail that leads from medieval allegory to modern satire, drama and novel of character" (PMM). Stuchs reprints the text published earlier, on 1 March 1497 by Bergmann de Olpe, but with a different typesetting and woodcuts. The translation from the original German was executed by Brant's student Jakob Locher, in collaboration with his master. The illustrations are taken from Peter Wagner's German edition of 1494. Most of the woodcuts in this copy have been painstakingly "enhanced" in the 19th century: the backgrounds have been blacked-in or filled with fine hatching lines and new details have been added, including checkerboard patterns on pavements and latticework to windows, a few objects tinted in black ink or light grey watercolour, and the word "Antichristus" written in a scroll in the background of the woodcut on leaf p4 verso (which shows the Antichrist above St Peter and his disciples on a boat). The drawing of a dainty fly appears on the outer margin of leaf d3 recto, and the printer's device of Bergman de Olpe has been deftly reproduced at the end of the main text before the index. The result does not resemble the appearance of de Olpe's woodcuts or any other contemporary edition of this work, indicating that this 19th-century intervention was not an attempt to copy, rather to engage with and "improve" the artistic quality of the work. The idea of a pilotless ship filled with irrational humans originates from Plato's Republic. Brant's didactic poem, composed in High German and first published in 1494 as Das Narrenschiff, is the most famous literary treatment of this theme. The ship is bound for Narragonia, a "fool's paradise". More than 100 brief chapters, each dedicated to a particular form of folly (including vices and crimes), are illustrated with a woodcut. The work was a Renaissance best-seller, with 26 different editions being published before 1500, including the first Latin translation by Jacob Locher in 1497 and the first French by Paul Rivière in 1497. "The arrangement of the chapters in the Stultifera navis does not confirm faithfully to that of the original and new material is introduced, more classical allusions are inserted and shifts in emphasis are made. Stultifera navis was key to the wider accessibility of the Narrenschiff in that it was the main source text from which all the translations into European vernacular languages (Dutch, English, Flemish, French) were made" (Andersen, p. 37). Elizabeth Andersen, "Low German and Processes of Cultural Transformation", in Rebecca Braun & Benedict Schofield, eds, Transnational German Studies, 2020. Small octavo (143 x 99 mm): A-S8 T4; 148 leaves, ff. With 117 woodcut illustrations. Modern facsimile of a 15th-century woodcut depicting a fool and portrait of author from the 1587 edition of Nikolaus Reusner's Icones sive imagines virorum literis illustrium tipped in at front at a later date. CXLV, [3]. Early 19th-century black morocco, smooth spine divided by blind fillets and lettered in gilt, blind-stamped border to covers and turn-ins, light blue coated endpapers, edges gilt. Occasional and mostly faded contemporary annotations; old cataloguing slip (describing another book) pasted on front pastedown. Extremities skilfully retouched, inner hinges cracked, but firm skinning to endpapers, paper repairs in margin of a few leaves (loss to side-notes on P4r supplied in manuscript), small worm hole to margin of a few initial and final gatherings (just touching printed text at rear), intermittent light foxing or damp staining. A very good copy.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a fifteenth-century verse satire aimed at the moral decay of German priests in the late medieval period. Its author, a German priest himself, observed with growing distaste the moral failings of those around him. Yet, beyond its era-specific clerical critique, this book also contains universal themes, including the dangers of hubris and the importance of moderation. The book is full of amusing anecdotes and entertaining stories that help drive home the author's more serious message. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

18th century calf ([21,4 x 16,4 cm]. 145 numb. leaves, 3 unnumb. leaves. With 117 large woodcut illustrations i.a. by Albrecht Dürer. -- FIRST LATIN EDITION. Brant's Ship of Fools became the most important of a long line of moralizing works in which the weaknesses and vices of mankind are satirized as follies. A satirical allegory in which more than 100 fools are on a ship's journey to the fictional country of Naragonia, holding up a critical and satirical mirror to the world through an entertaining description of their vices and peculiarities. Composed in popular humorous verse and illustrated by a remarkable series of 117 woodcuts of which seventy-five are now attributed to the young Albrecht Dürer - the book was an immediate success. The Ship of Fools was the first original work by a German which passed into world literature and its influence was extensive and prolonged. Its most immediate imitators were Geiler von Kaisersberg, Thomas Murner, Hans Sachs and Johannes Fischart. Erasmus Rotterdam's Moriae Encomium was directly inspired by it. Jacobus Locher's important Latin translation is not a literal one, but rather a free adaptation (see: Michael Rupp. "Narrenschiff" und "Stultifera navis". Münster, Waxmann, 2002). It was this Locher version that quickly spread across national borders and made Brant's Ship of Fools an international success, served as the basis for nearly all the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century reprints and translations. Seventy-five of the woodcuts are attributed to the young Albrecht Dürer, the rest is ascribed to the master of the Heintz Narr' (a provisional name deriving from the woodcut on f. 15 recto) and other local artists. (see: Friedrich Winkler: Dürer und die Illustrationen zum Narrenschiff. Berlin, 1951 and the Katalog zum Dürerjahr. München, 1971, N°. 154). They largely match those of the first and second German editions, three new woodcuts were engraved for this edition, the title illustration was re-engraved and the woodcut on 'm1 verso' was also re-engraved, the decorative borders are only partially related. "The woodcut illustrations created for the Das Narrenschiff are of immense density and tenseness. Since there was no iconographical tradition for this newly conceived text, the subjects and scenes of the illustrations had to be created entirely new. The images presented are of such convincing force that their equal in design had never before been seen" (A Heavenly Craft, p. 63). The Ship of Fools is the first literary work to announce the discovery of the New World, which is not surprising, since it was Bergmann who published the first German edition of the the Columbus letter, announcing his discovery of the New World, in 1493. -- A very good copy with some contemporary underlinings and marginalia. Slightly trimmed at the top, so that in some cases the pagination is somewhat cut off. A corner tear and a small tear in the white margin added, last leaf of the table laid down. Cover at front joint partly burst. - A very good copy. || || -------------- || || ERSTE LATEINISCHE AUSGABE. 63).

Schultz).
