First Edition. (Manchester: Associated Newspapers n.d late 1930s). First UK Edition. A small format publication of "gags" originally included as an insert with the Sunday Dispatch. Max Miller wrote for the Sunday Dispatch (from December 1939 to July 1940) by arrangement with Warner Brothers. These inserts of slightly risque "double entendre" jokes from the early months of WW2 must be exceedingly scarce. Photographs/scans available upon request.

All of the pages are intact and the cover is intact and the spine may show signs of wear. The book may have minor markings which are not specifically mentioned. A good condition book. No dust jacket. Mild edgewear to the boards and some loss to the spine ends. The binding has slackened and the pages are thumbed and tanned. Overall a good clear copy.

1p., 4to. In good condition, lightly aged. Signed 'Cyril Joad'. Written in the same month as Britain and France had declared war, the letter begins: 'I don't know whether you are still running the Sunday Dispatch, but if you are, how about an article on the philosophy which underlies the Nazi rule in Germany? Till war broke out one had to soft-pedal one's views of these monstrous ideas, but now that it has come, one can take off the muzzle and say what one likes.' He outlines the 'main heads' of his article: 'theory of the State, theory of the relation of the individual to the State, theory of the whole duty of man, theory of the whole duty of woman, views as to the education of children, views as to the divinity of Hitler, views as to the secret [last word in autograph] mission of Germans, views as to the non-human character of all non-Aryans'. He has compiled a 'list of charming quotations from Nazi writers and speakers on these subjects', and the whole would make a 'keen article, partly amused (e.g. "Hitler is lonely; so is God. Hitler is like God."), partly horrified (e.g. "Justice and Hitler's will are one and the same thing."), and wholly denunciatory.' In an autograph postscript he writes: 'If you are not running the Dispatch, how are you and what are you doing and are you ever at the Savage [Club]?'.

Softcover. Condizione: Very Good. First edition thus. Pictures by Wm. W. Denslow. Folio. Single bifolium making four pages. Pen writing in the lower margin of the front and back covers, edgewear including some marginal tears one partially affecting the music though it remains perfectly legible, and soiling to the exterior, still a very good copy of this fragile publication. For voice and piano. A scarce piece, *OCLC* locates only a single holding.

Text: "By some error the enclosed [no longer] cheque for 5 guineas has ben sent me in payment for my article in last Sunday's Weekly Despatch. There can, of course, be no question of my accepting remuneration in that scale. Perhaps you will consult with those who arrange these things & let my know their conclusion.".

Newspaper. An original 1928 Sunday color comics section from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, December 9, 1928. Celebrating the newspaper's fiftieth anniversary, the front page features a full-page drawing of Jiggs and Maggie by George McManus in honor of the occasion. The second page is the comic strip Nize Baby by Milt Gross, with a panel at the top by Gross congratulating the newspaper. The third page is a full-page one-panel of Toonerville by Fontaine Fox. The last page has at the top a half-page comic strip called Ella Cinders by Bill Conselman and Charlie Plumb with a half-page ad at the bottom. Newsprint broadsheet, 15.5 x 21.5 inches; 4 pages; full color. Condition: Overall, Good with foxing and a small hole to the center of the first page. Will be sandwiched securely between stiff layers of cardboard and shipped the next business day after payment is received.

Due to fragile construction and limited distribution, an elusive publication.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Nearly a complete three-year run of this weekly newspaper, under its changing masthead. Two folio volumes bound in later 19th century blue half-leather over marbled paper boards, with raised bands and gilt titles to spines. Rubbing to boards and edges, old owner's name inside front covers, and some page repairs and close margins. In all a very neat, sound and handsome set. A socially and politically important three years in news-reporting, with a good deal on the Napoleonic crisis and other matters of naval, international and economic import, sporting intelligence, as well as Georgian period London society . Only occasional illustrations, including the Island of St. Helena, a hand-coloured vignette of Blackheath Pedestrian George Wilson, the ornate mortar of Cadiz, and the Grand National Jubilee of August 1, 1814. One series title-page is present, for April to the end of December 1815, along with a chronology and subject index for the period. Each issue appears to be eight pages, indicating a total of about 1200 pages.

First Edition. Large four=page newsspread for Sunday Morning, April 27, 1862. Volume XV, Number 1. Edges yellowed, light chipping. Dark splotch bottom of front page, not obliterating type. Old tape a left margin front page. Folded, with some closed tears. Articles on Society of Friends, news of the war, lewtters from soldiers, advertisements. Fragile but quite readable. Size: Large Folio.

Broadside (approx. 20¾" x 12¼"), text in quadruple column and entirely devoted to Bonaparte's defeat and the exploits of Wellington, as detailed in a letter from Wellington dated Waterloo, June 19, 1815 and other dispatches; previous folds in eighths, short tear repaired on verso at one fold, paper limp; all else good or better. Not in Tapley; not found in OCLC.
