[16], CXXXII, 268, XXXIV, [6] pp.Fourth edition of the official pharmacopoeia of Paris, in 1639 first compiled and edited by Philippe de Hardouin de Saint-Jacques (d. 1659), dean of the faculty of medicine at the University of Paris, with a second edition in 1745. The third edition was edited by Hyacinthe-Theodor Baron, also printed by Guillaume Cavalier, in 1732. The following fifth and sixth editions - perhaps the most well-known - were edited by Jean Baptist Nicolas Boyer, and printed by Cavalier in 1758 and 1760.With two erased ownership entries (one dated 1786) on the title-page and another owner's inscription (the initials "F.M." of an apparently later owner). Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. In Latin and Hebrew in parallel columns. (8), 78 pages. 193 x 151 mm. Pages a bit soiled. The Latin translation here is by Peringer, the leading 17th century scholar on the Karaites. His work helped raise the Karaits status among Christians. The Swedish King, Charles XI (reigned 1660-1697) caused the Karaites to be viewed by many as a separate ethnic group from the Jews. Charles XI sent Gustav Peringer (1651-1710), an orientalist from the University of Uppsala, on a fact-finding mission to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the information he provided contributed to the gradual perception and treatment of the Karaites an ethnoreligious group separate from Jews. Thus, while the negative image of the Jew prevailed in Poland-Lithuania, the Karaites, not being viewed as Jewish, made them kosher.

XXXII, 378; 307; XIV, 15-439; IV, 7-322, [65] pp.First edition of the Dutch translation by P. Loosjes of William Robertson's highly important history of the discovery of America, first published in 1777 as The history of America, an immensely popular anthropological account of American history that focuses on the explorations, the conquest of Mexico and Peru, and the anthropology of the indigenous American cultures. In these volumes Robertson wrote the first history of the discovery and Spanish conquest of America to be based on ample bibliographical information and documents in the Simancas archives. The bibliography (a catalogue of Spanish books and manuscripts) at the end of the last volume, pp. 303-322, is remarkable for the time (Borba de Moraes). The actions of Columbus and Cortez are especially well researched.Rev. William Robertson (1721-1793) was a highly respected Scottish historian, minister in the Church of Scotland, and Principal of the University of Edinburgh. He is regarded, along with David Hume and Edward Gibbon, as one of the most important British historians of the 18th century. After his ground-breaking works: The history of Scotland, during the reigns of Queen Mary and of King James VI (1759), and The history of the reign of the Emperor Charles V (1769) followed his History of America (London, for W. Strahan, T. Cadell & J. Balfour, 1777), which was reprinted several times and translated into many languages. Robertson's histories reflect his interest in social theory; they stress the importance of material and environmental factors in determining the course of civilization. With the bookplate of the Dutch historian and author François Constant Ghislain Boissevain (1952-). Head of the spine of vol. 4 somewhat damaged, bindings a little worn around the edges. [40], CCCCCCCIIII, ll.Very rare edition of the Code of Justinian, printed by Yolande Bonhomme (active ca. 1497-1557). It was likely the first time this text was printed by a female printer, as we have not been able to find an earlier edition printed by a woman. This edition by Bonhomme has never been on the market before, is only available in a few libraries and is not mentioned in several of the most important relevant reference works.Bonhomme was the daughter of bookseller and printer Pasquier Bonhomme (active 1451-1501) and the wife of printer Thielman Kerver (active ca. 1497-1522). Women in France were not allowed to start their own printing business, but they could take over their husband's company after his death. When Kerver passed away in 1522, Bonhomme continued the business under her own name and remained in charge for 35 years. She was one of the most successful female printers of her time and is the first woman known to have printed the Bible (1526).This edition by Bonhomme is heavily glossed. Although it is not mentioned, these glosses are very likely by Accursius (ca. 1183-1263), a professor of law at the university of Bologna. With an extensive owner's inscription and a black, oval library stamp on the title-page, and with annotations in the margins of some pages. The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed, the leather is slightly scratched and soiled, slightly affecting the clarity of the blind-tooling. Two ink stains on the title-page, but the text is still legible, the inner margin of the title-page and the lower margin of the first text leaf are restored, without affecting the text, a small tear in the woodcut initial on leaf 2A1 (prefatio G. Haloandri), without loss of paper, the outer edges of the final 10 leaves are slightly frayed, the lower outer corners on the last 6 leaves are folded, also without affecting the text. Overall in good condition.l WorldCat 312067202, 313412679, 993078134 (4 copies); Not in Adams; Brunet; Graesse; USTC.
