(ar). Greely's voluminous official account bound with Schley's official rescue account. In 1881, First Lieutenant Greely was named to command the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition. Promoted by Henry W. Howgate, its purpose was to establish one of a chain of meteorological-observation stations as part of the First International Polar Year. The expedition also was commissioned by the US government to collect astronomical and polar magnetic data, which was carried out by the astronomer Edward Israel, who was part of Greely's crew. Another goal of the expedition was to search for any clues of USS Jeannette, lost in the Arctic two years earlier The expedition sailed on the steamship SS Proteus.[1] Greely was without previous Arctic experience, but he and his party succeeded in discovering and exploring much of the coast of northwest Greenland. The expedition also crossed Ellesmere Island from east to west, and James B. Lockwood and David Legge Brainard achieved a new "farthest north" record of 83° 23' 8" on Lockwood Island.[7] In 1882, Greely sighted a mountain range during a dog sledding exploration to the interior of northern Ellesmere Island and named it the Conger Range.[8] He also sighted the Innuitian Mountains from Lake Hazen. Greely's party ran into difficulty when two supply parties failed to reach Greely's encampment Fort Conger on Ellesmere Island in 1882 and 1883.[1] In accordance with his instructions, Greely decided in August 1883 to abandon Fort Conger and travel south.[10] His team reached Cape Sabine expecting to find food and equipment left by the supply ships, but these had not been provided.[1] With winter setting in Greely and his men were forced to remain at Cape Sabine with inadequate rations and little fuel. Stereoscopic image of the Greely expedition exhibition at the Columbian Exposition, 1893. Greely and the other survivors were near death; one died on the homeward journey. They were venerated as heroes, though the heroism was temporarily tainted by sensational accusations of cannibalism, which Greely denied. Schley: A.B. 18385. "Official report of the finding and rescue of the seven survivors of the ill-fated Lady Franklin Bay expedition led by Greely. Contains a detailed report on the expedition of the Bear, Thetis and Alert; the personnel, provisions, itineraries; the Bear and Thetis' trip into Smith Sound, rescue of Greely and companions at Cape Sabine; notes on the condition of the rescued men, and ice conditions en route" (A.B.).

Da: William Reese Company, New York, NY, U.S.A.
Copia autografata
A printed table, accomplished in manuscript, recording the full crew complement of the U.S.S. Constellation at the outset of its second Mediterranean tour in 1832. The Constellation was one of the first three ships in the United States Navy, authorized by the Naval Act of 1794. It patrolled the Caribbean to protect commercial interests during the Quasi-War in 1798 (where it won the first major victory by an American warship, over the French L'Insurgente), participated in both Barbary wars, and cruised the eastern seaboard during the War of 1812. In the late 1820s and early 1830s, the ship made two trips to the Mediterranean to protect American shipping interests and collect indemnities, also transporting American foreign ministers. The second voyage was forced to return home due to a cholera outbreak in Constantinople, exacerbated by quarantine breakers (including Captain George C. Read). This monthly return is for the second month of Constellation's second Mediterranean tour, which set out in April 1832. The document records the complement of sailors and marines of each rank present on the ship, the number sick or fit for duty, and the difference to the full complement intended for the ship. The crew of 357 lost only one of their number in May, a seaman, although they may have felt his loss more keenly as Read records that they were already seven seamen below complement. The document is signed by Captain Read and countersigned by purser Josiah Colston. Captain George C. Read (1788-1862) was a decorated naval officer with a long career. Read served on the U.S.S. Constitution as a young man and eventually became its commander, the head of the Philadelphia Naval School, and was promoted to Rear Admiral. While Melancthon Taylor Woolsey considered him to have "great self-restraint and self-respect" and his historical legacy has been largely unblemished, he was in fact quite unpopular with his crew on this particular journey. According to journals kept by his officers on board, Read was mercurial and selfish, and did not hesitate to lie, cheat, and browbeat his subordinates in order to get his way. This culminated in the cholera outbreak of 1834, when the captain broke quarantine to attend a dinner party in Constantinople (which included a very sick guest), nearly facing a mutiny when he returned to his outraged crew a few days later. An informative document from the later career of one of the U.S. Navy's first vessels. Old folds, center fold splitting at edges, scattered tanning and staining. About very good.
Editore: London: James Imray, 1849., 1849
Da: William Reese Company, New York, NY, U.S.A.
A large "blue back" chart of the west coast of southern Mexico and Central America, extending from Cebaco Island in present-day Panama in the south to San Blas, Mexico, to the north. The map contains eight insets delineating important safe ports: Sihuatinijo (Zihuatinejo), Acapulco, Guatulco, San Carlos, Realejo, Salinas Bay, Culebra, and San Blas. It also shows views of several volcanic mountain formations from the sea at Colina, Guatemala, and Viejo, as well as views of Cape Corrientes, the Tetas de Coyuca, and the entrance to Acapulco. The map is the seventh in a series of eight that chart the Pacific coastlines of North America and South America published by the London firm of James Imray in the mid-19th century. During this period Imray was fast becoming the principal private supplier of sea charts to the merchant ships of Great Britain. His popularity was due in large part to the production of charts such as this one, which provided new and essential basic guides to areas of the Pacific beginning to be frequented more heavily by private British traders. "Salesmanship and prolific output alone would not have brought success unless the quality of the product had been right. In achieving this Imray had an advantage over earlier generations of commercial chart publishers, who faced a continual problem acquiring adequate hydragraphic information for their charts. By Imray's time accurate new survey material was fast becoming available for all parts of the world. His contribution was to present the material in a convenient and familiar form for the merchant ship navigator. This had changed little over the years and Imray retained the well-tried format of a small-scale chart covering as much as possible of the sea passage for a particular trade, with numerous large-scale plans of ports" - Fisher. Rare, with OCLC recording only one copy, at the Huntington Library, and not in the British Library. FISHER, THE MAKERS OF THE BLUEBACK CHARTS, p.39. OCLC 80151015. Engraved chart, 26½ x 39½ inches. Backed with linen. Two old vertical fold lines. A couple very small chips around edges. Lightly tanned, with a few scattered foxmarks. Very good.
