In the year 684 AD, The former concubine of the Emperor, the young and ambitious Wu, as the first and only woman, climbs the Chinese Kaiserthron. Their way to power lies in the shadow of many mysterious murders, executed by Buddhist monks. Firstly, the famous judge Di, a staunch Confucian, succeeds in uncovering the secret plans of the Iron Empress and her Buddhist allies. 8vo, pp. [3], 110-114, [4]; extracted from the American Antiquarian; later stiff brown boards backed in burgundy cloth, staple bound. An Ayer Linguistics duplicate with a Newberry Library release stamp in bottom corner of the first leaf. In 1882 L. Brinton's refutation, first published in the American Antiquarian, exposed it as a hoax.

Harry Price founded the National Laboratory of Psychical Research in 1926 as a rival to the Society of Psychical Research, aiming to provide a more scientific analysis of supernatural occurrences. One of Price's most famous cases was that of the medium Helen Duncan. In 1930 Price paid Duncan the significant sum of £50 to undergo several months of scientific tests on her séances, during which, and despite many attempts at redirection on Duncan's behalf, they proved the ectoplasm she would notoriously produce to be instead regurgitated cheese cloth and egg white soaked paper. Two works, octavo. Original wrappers, printed in brown. Supplement with original glassine. Price obscured on main catalogue, glassine somewhat chipped; excellent copies.
